1987Vuonna 2050 Tau Cetiin perustettiin ihmissiirtokunta. Kaikki sujui hyvin siihen saakka kunnes Encken syndroomaksi nimitetty tauti tappoi suurimman osan siirtolaisista. Jäljelle jääneet evakuoivat planeetan.
Kaksi vuotta myöhemmin lääke löytyi ja jälleenasutus saattoi alkaa. Ongelmana tosin oli, että Tau Ceti III:n meteoritörmäyksessä vaurioitunut päätietokone ei pitänyt ajatuksesta. Tau Cetin puolustus on niin vahva, että ainoa mahdollisuus lamauttaa puolustus on sulkea Centraliksen pääreaktori. Ympäri planeettaa olevat jäähdytintankojen kappaleet on sovitettava yhteen ja työnnettävä pääreaktoriin. Retkikunnan mukana on yksi vahvasti aseistettu ja panssaroitu maakiitäjä, jolla ehkä on mahdollista selviytyä tehtävästä. Tarvitaan enää vapaaehtoinen.
Ja kukapa ei olisi vapaaehtoinen päästäkseen pelaamaan näin taidokkaasti tehtyä peliä. Kolmiulotteinen maisema (toteutettu varjostetulla viivagrafiikalla), joka on täynnä vakuuttavia yksityiskohtia. Vuorokauden aikakin heijastuu näytössä, eli päivänvalossa rakennukset, viholliset ym. näkyvät selvästi, mutta esimerkiksi vähän ennen auringonlaskua vain korkeiden rakennusten huiput näkyvät ja sen jälkeen ei tietysti näy mitään.
Tekniikalle kiitos, kiitäjässä on paitsi infrapunanäyttö (joka näyttääkin infrapunanäytöltä) myös kahdeksan Starlight-valorakettia.
Aseista löytyy laser, ohjuksia ja ohjustentorjuntaohjuksia puhumattakaan tietokoneesta, elitemäisestä nelisuuntaisesta näytöstä, tutkasta, kompasseista ja muusta mittaristosta.
Peli itsessään on sekoitus Impossible Missionia, Eliteä, Battlezonea ja vaikka mitä. Tuloksena on yksi Spectrumin parhaista peleistä kautta aikojen. Pelatessa unohtaa sen olevan vain peli, joka on saanut maksimipisteet joka arvostelussa. (Eikä tämäkään ole poikkeus.) Hetkessä sitä ei läpi pelaa, mutta onneksi tilanteen saa nauhalle talteen. Tau Ceti on itse täydellisyys pienintä yksityiskohtaa (joita siinä on paljon) myöten ja sitä voisi kehua retostella monta sivua.
1987In 2050 a human colony was founded on Tau Ceti. Everything went well until a disease known as Encke's syndrome killed most of the colonists. The survivors evacuated the planet.
Two years later a cure was found and resettlement could begin. The snag was that the main computer of Tau Ceti III, damaged in a meteor strike, didn't care for the idea. Tau Ceti's defences are so strong that the only way to cripple them is to shut down the main reactor in Centralis. Pieces of cooling rods scattered around the planet have to be fitted together and pushed into the main reactor. The expedition has brought along one heavily armed and armoured ground skimmer, with which it might just be possible to pull off the mission. All that's needed now is a volunteer.
And who wouldn't volunteer to get to play such a skilfully made game? A three-dimensional landscape (done in shaded line graphics), full of convincing detail. Even the time of day is reflected on screen: in daylight the buildings, enemies and so on show up clearly, but shortly before sunset, for example, only the tops of tall buildings can be seen, and after that, naturally, you can't see a thing.
Praise be to technology: the skimmer has not only an infrared display (which actually looks like an infrared display) but also eight Starlight flares.
For weapons there's a laser, missiles and anti-missile missiles, not to mention the computer, the Elite-style four-way view, the radar, compasses and the rest of the instrumentation.
The game itself is a mix of Impossible Mission, Elite, Battlezone and who knows what else. The result is one of the best Spectrum games of all time. While playing you forget that it's just a game, one that has scored top marks in every review. (And this one is no exception.) You won't get through it in a hurry, but luckily you can save your position to tape. Tau Ceti is perfection itself down to the smallest detail (and it has plenty of those), and you could go on singing its praises and raving about it for pages.
