Wizball

Toteutus on esimerkillinen.

Omaperäisyydellä on hintansa. Monitorini päällä majaileva korppi huomautti, että Wizball jää Pohjolassa mätänemään hyllyihin, sillä englanninkielisillä ohjeilla on suuri osuus pelissä. Wizballin pelaaminen ilman ohjeiden lukemista on tuhoon tuomittu yritys.

1987Just when everyone thought originality was dead, the Sensible Software men let Wizball loose.

The colours have been stolen from the wizard world, and Wiz and his cat intend to put an end to the general greyness. So the nimble wizard turns himself and his meowing companion into balls of a sort and declares war on hordes of sprites. By shooting the assorted baddies and collecting the balls that destroyed enemies leave behind, Wiz can gain special abilities, such as control over his movements and stuff like that. Shoot the colour balls floating over the landscape and they shed drops of colour, which the cat has to catch before they hit the ground. Pipes take you to other worlds, where you get other colours, and every now and then you pop off to mix them. When the right colour has been gathered, the scenery turns seriously pretty. And from there it's on to lay into a new, harder landscape.

Sensible Software's previous game is the resplendent Parallax, and Wizball carries on along the same superb line. The execution is exemplary. The game is full of good, inventive details. The graphics are superb, so are the bleeps and blips, and the well-considered playability lifts the game onto very nearly the topmost branch. There's a whole bunch of multiplayer options on top of that.

To tell the truth, I didn't manage to colour in a single landscape, but at least I had fun trying. Wizball is such a tight package that I'm eagerly awaiting Sensible's next work. Originality has its price. The raven lodging on top of my monitor pointed out that Wizball will be left to rot on the shelves up here in the North, since the English instructions play a big part in the game. Playing Wizball without reading the instructions is an attempt doomed to failure. Mind you, the Finnish-language instructions should be finished as I write this.

With a sigh, I share the raven's opinion and pour another.
