Vikings
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1987Tanskalaisen Kele Linen ensimmäinen peli alkaa Vikings Linenä.
Vietnamin viidakoihin sotavankeja pelastamaan hyytyneiden luulisi sekoavan riemusta, kun tämä Rambo-kaavaa hyödyntävä teos löytyy peliputiikin hyllyltä.
Skandinaavisen sarvipään täytyy vanhuudenvaroiksi ryöstää saari pari. Kanta-asukkaat eivät halua jakaa vähästään vaan heittelevät smörrebröd-Conania keihäillä. Miekan löytäminen auttaa maksamaan kalavelat ja soihdulla saa mökitkin tuhkaksi. Siinä korkoa korolle.
Muutaman muun esineen löytäminen mahdollistaa uuden upean viikinkialuksen rakentamisen. Sillä suoritetaan seuramatka Kuoleman saarelle, jonka rannoilla lepäävät miljoonien viikinkien luut keskiyön auringon vaalentamina.
Vihollisten määrässä olisi vähän saanut itsesensuuri toimia. Niitä kun sikiää nopeammin kuin vetreinkään viikinki ehti tappaa.
Eniten Vikingsissä miellytti huvittava demo ennen pelin alkua. Myös koko ruudun täyttävä latauskuva on hieno. Äitiäkään ei tarvitse piinata, ohjeet ovat myös suomeksi. Vahinko ettei tämä pelityyppi oikein iske, olisi ollut koko rahan edestä huvia.
Vikingsin grafiikka on kyllä varsinainen Rambo-rip-off, mutta sankarilla sentään pysyy paita päällä. Musiikki miellytti. Se alleviivaa hyvin tappojuhlia valaen taistelutahtoa ylivoimaisen viholliston edessä.
Vikings ei ole omaperäisyyden riemuvoitto, mutta esimerkiksi aktiivisille Rambon pelaajille peli sopii kuin miekka mahaan. Kelvollista pohjoismaista jälkeä.

You'd think those who got bogged down in the jungles of Vietnam rescuing prisoners of war would go wild with joy when this Rambo-formula opus turns up on the game shop shelf.
The Scandinavian horn-head has to plunder an island or two to put something by for his old age. The natives don't want to share what little they have, and instead pelt smørrebrød-Conan with spears. Finding a sword helps settle old scores, and with a torch you can burn the huts to ashes too. Compound interest, that is.
Finding a few other items makes it possible to build a splendid new Viking ship. In it you set off on a package tour to the Isle of Death, on whose shores lie the bones of millions of Vikings, bleached by the midnight sun.
A little self-censorship could have been applied to the number of enemies. They breed faster than even the spryest Viking could kill them.
What I liked most about Vikings was the amusing demo before the game starts. The full-screen loading picture is fine too. No need to pester Mum either: the instructions are in Finnish as well. A pity this type of game doesn't really grab me, or it would have been fun worth every penny.
The graphics in Vikings are a real Rambo rip-off, all right, but at least the hero keeps his shirt on. The music was pleasing. It underlines the slaughterfests nicely, instilling the will to fight in the face of the overwhelming enemy host.
Vikings is no triumph of originality, but for, say, active Rambo players the game fits like a sword in the gut. Decent Nordic workmanship.
