Top Gun

Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Top Gun

Kyllä nykytekniikka on hurjaa.

Oceanin kahden hengen lentosimulaattori on kirkuva pettymys.

1987I'm flying in front of the baddie, afterburner singing, so the wretch can't pump my plane full of lead cigarette butts. But what do you know: the scoundrel shows up side-on in front of me? A glance at the radar reveals, though, that the villain really is behind me, and the view from the enemy plane says the same. Modern technology sure is wild.

Ocean's two-player flight simulator is a screaming disappointment. Games like this are rare, and I would very much like to play a decent one.

But Ocean has managed to botch even a simple idea. There is no rhyme or reason whatsoever to the whole of Top Gun.

Top Gun is a textbook example of how to ruin a flight simulator completely. Even the opening alone, where the planes take off from the deck of an aircraft carrier, looks awful. The scenery consists of a horizon drawn as a dashed line, so not even by accident does any feeling of flight arise.

The planes don't behave like real ones in any sense. When you let go of the joystick, the plane steadies itself back into level flight. You can't do any kind of aerobatics with the plane, such as loops, and climbing or diving happens at a 45-degree angle. The planes are done in "vector" graphics, which in practice turn out to be outlined sprites. The sounds are pathetic. The film's theme tune plays only (and thank the Lord for that!) at the start of each game. During the game itself there is no roar of jet engines, and the rattle of the guns is closer to a huh-huh-huh-huh-huh-huh noise.

A game that could easily have been made into a good one has been turned into a cold cash-grab of a thing that is unlikely to appeal to any gamer.
