F-14 Tomcat
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1989 SyksyDo you want to be Tom Cruise, even though your acting is bound to be a couple of notches better than his? You can play at being Tomppa in Top Gun, but if you too think that game is sheer junk, Activision has a worthy alternative. The American Dynamix (Skyfox, Arcticfox) has left Electronic Arts' employ for Activision's payroll, but the standard and style of its games have stayed more or less the same.
Dynamix's F-14 Tomcat tests whether its wings will carry it as a flight simulator, but in my opinion it doesn't really succeed. After all, few serious-minded flight sims come with a computer-controlled landing system that lets even the most helpless Hot Gun fumble their F-14 safely onto the carrier deck with their eyes shut and their hands tied behind their back (this has been tested).
So F-14 Tomcat follows a flyboy's career from a drooling, lisping cadet to a macho-bullshit pilot hero oozing courage and chest hair. Somewhat in spite of itself, it gives the impression of either a vastly simplified flight sim or else a Skyfox clone into which someone has tried to inject a bit of depth. Well, whichever it is, the F-14 is left waggling its wings at the level of mediocrity on the scale. There's nothing in the graphics to produce any "Gasp! Choke!" effects, but they do work reasonably well, although Dynamix has taken a shortcut by using sprites. Because of this, enemy planes in the distance are misshapen blobs, and in the end they bounce madly around the screen, stuck in almost the same pose the whole time.
The sound score is explained by the excellent engine sound, the best hum I've heard out of the C-64 so far. There isn't enough music to become a nuisance, and apart from the engine noise the sound effects don't exactly shine either.
The instruction booklet turns out to be pretty useless. The only necessary parts are the diagram in the object recognition section at the start and the key chart. You can skip the explanations of combat tactics, because the combat manoeuvres are practically impossible to pull off. If you've never played a game like this before, you should of course read the manual through. The manual runs to 28 pages and the game itself, oddly enough, comes on two double-sided floppies.
F-14 Tomcat is just the thing for a pilot starting out with flight simulators, but it's boring for the pros in the field.
