Starion
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Teknisenä taidonnäytteenä Starion on vakuuttava. Vektorigrafiikka on todella nopeaa, nykimätöntä ja näyttävää. Pelinä Starion on uutuudenviehätyksen häivyttyä kuitenkin kohtalaisen puuduttava kokemus.
Seeing Is Believing.
1987Once upon a time there was an age when Commodore 64 and BBC owners strolled around with Elite boxes under their arms, while the rest were, for the time being, the less happy keepers of other machines. In those dark days Starion brought comfort to these unhappy souls.
So Starion is a vector-graphics shoot-em-up too, but that's where the similarities with Elite end. Starion's backstory goes like this: aliens are threatening to destroy the fabric of time, but a time pilot can save it by warping into a time zone. There you shoot the enemy to pieces, collect the letter it was carrying as cargo, and once you have enough letters, form a word out of them. The word is then carried to the time zone whose clue it fits. This loop gets ground through again and again until the universe can breathe freely.
So nothing more remarkable than an unholy alliance of a crossword and a shooting game. It's just that the words are of such a calibre that they can leave a Finn completely stumped.
As a technical showpiece Starion is convincing. The vector graphics are really fast, jerk-free and impressive. As a game, though, once the novelty wears off, Starion is a fairly numbing experience.
Epilogue: some time passed and the Commodore 64 conversion hit the market. If you see it somewhere really cheap, it's worth buying, because it is surely the least successful conversion of all time. Seeing Is Believing.
