Spy vs. Spy III - The Arctic Antics

Grafiikka on siedettävää, tausta scrollaa hieman nyppien, muttei haittaa joystickin kimpussa äheltävää pelaajaa. Musiikki on inhottavaa vinkumista eivätkä tehosteetkaan juuri hämmästytä. Omituinen kontrollisysteemi vie pelistä mielenkiinnon ja peli suorastaan haisee rahat pois-idean äärimmäiseltä hyväksikäytöltä. Tarpeeton jatko muutenkin väsähtäneeseen ideaan.

1987The spies familiar from MAD are back yet again, this time in their third concoction already. Now the rascally mine-builders are chasing an interplanetary missile at the North Pole. To be precise, the task is "to find and launch the underground, intergalactic rocket before the worst possible thing happens", as the instructions so aptly put it. Before the launch you need three items: a time card, a gyroscope and a uranium fuel canister.

One can only ask what a device as advanced as an interplanetary rocket needs a gyroscope for. Apparently that's none of our business, so who cares? The game has options to spare. Having fumbled your way through the opening choices, you find yourself wrestling with the joystick. However much you peek at the instructions and spell your way through them, the little spy refuses to obey properly. The thing is, the instructions assume you'll pick up the controls quicker than you can say "urgh", and dive straight into explaining the actions.

And there are plenty of those, everything from sawing holes in the ice to making the ice slippery. Instead of swords, the dudes roll up balls of snow and hurl them about. This in turn lowers your body temperature, and the result is death by freezing. You can pop into the igloos to warm up if you get chilly. A real pair of ice picks is also a must if you happen to drop through a hole in the ice.

The graphics are tolerable, and the background scrolls a bit jerkily, but that doesn't bother the player grunting away at the joystick. The music is nasty whining, and the effects hardly amaze either. The weird control system takes all the interest out of the game, and the game positively reeks of the cash-in idea being milked to the absolute limit. A pointless sequel to an idea that was worn out anyway.
