Slapfight

On Slapfigtissa sentään yksi tavallisuudesta poikkeava ase.

1987We've got Delta, we've got Nemesis, and now the extra-weapons-from-icons shoot-'em-ups gain a new member in Slapfight.

Based on Taito's coin-op, Slapfight isn't a full-blown Nemesis clone, though, since it scrolls in the normal top-to-bottom style, as thousands of other shoot-'em-ups have done and millions more are yet to do. Nemesis, of course, scrolls from right to left, as thousands . . .

So in Slapfight you shoot critters, some of which leave a starfish behind. By collecting it you can fit your ship with extra oomph, better weapons, racing stripes and a stuffed rabbit. At the end of each wave you try to square up to the mothership, after which you shoot critters, some of which leave . . .

Slapfight does at least have one weapon that's out of the ordinary. At the press of a button, heat-seeking missiles launch at every target on the screen. What a sense of power and might!

Surely nobody seriously expects originality from games any more. Slapfight is at least a professionally made shoot-'em-up, and quite fun to play for a while, too. But the emphasis is on the words "for a while".

A slight slackening has been noticeable in Imagine's recent games. They have mostly been converted from fairly simple source material, and the results have turned out accordingly. Slapfight follows this line. It could be worse, but otherwise there's nothing new under the sun.
