Slaine
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1988Martech kunnostautui Nemesis The Warlockilla, ainoalla hyvällä pelillä joka pohjautuu 2000AD-sarjakuvalehden monasti peleissä nähtyihin sankareihin. Menestyksen innoittamana Martech on nyt tekaissut pelin samaisen lehden tasokkaammasta sankaripäästä eli Slainesta.
Slaine on kelttiläinen soturi, joka sidekickinsä kääpiö Ukon kanssa teilaa väkeä Ison Britannian alueella. Erikoisominaisuutena Slainella on varppikouristus, jolloin taistelija muuttuu lähinnä demonin näköiseksi tappokoneeksi.
Vaan millainen on peli?
Ensi vilkaisulla Slaine näyttää maukkaalta. Pelissä on käytetty omaperäistä reflexsysteemiä, eli Slainen ajatukset valuvat kuvaruudussa ja niihin täytyy tarrata joystickohjatulla kädellä kiinni. Grafiikka on erinomaisen näyttävää ja kaikki tarpeellinen tieto poksahtelee ikkunoina näkyviin. Hyvä musiikki kilkuttelee taustalla.
Jo parin minuutin pelin jälkeen alkaa omaperäisyys rapista. Reflex on ärsyttävä tapa antaa käskyjä ja kun pintakoreuden riisuu paljastuu alta tavanomainen tekstiseikkailupeli. Eikä edes hääppöinen sellainen. Infoikkunoiden tieto erottuu heikosti TV-ruudussa ja yleensäkin koko peliin kyllästyy suunnattoman nopeasti.
Henkilökohtaisesti pidän tekstiseikkailupelejä liian rajoittuneina, jotta jaksaisin niistä nauttia (Infocom ja Magnetic Scrolls poislukien). Ja koska Slaine on vielä ärsyttäväkin, kuuluu lopputuomio: tarpeeton peli, johon on tärvätty potentiaalisesti mainio lisenssi. Ja se oli vielä keltisti sanottu. Tekstipelimiesten kannattanee kuitenkin tarkistaa asia.
1988Martech distinguished itself with Nemesis The Warlock, the only good game based on the heroes of the comic 2000AD, who have been seen in games many a time. Inspired by that success, Martech has now knocked out a game about a hero from the classier end of the same comic, namely Slaine.
Slaine is a Celtic warrior who, together with his sidekick, the dwarf Ukko, cuts folk down across the territory of Great Britain. As a special feature, Slaine has the warp spasm, in which the fighter turns into a killing machine that looks more or less like a demon.
Slaine draws heavily on Celtic mythology. This gives the strip its distinctive flavour, thanks to which, as a comic, it beats dime-a-dozen macho barbarians such as some Conan. Worth getting to know if you have the chance. But what's the game like?
At first glance Slaine looks tasty. The game uses an original reflex system: Slaine's thoughts drift across the screen and you have to grab hold of them with a joystick-controlled hand. The graphics are superbly spectacular and all the necessary information pops up in windows. Good music tinkles away in the background.
After just a couple of minutes of play the originality starts to flake off. Reflex is an irritating way of giving commands, and once you strip away the surface glitter, what's revealed underneath is an ordinary text adventure. And not even a particularly good one at that. The information in the info windows is hard to make out on a TV screen, and in general you get fed up with the whole game tremendously fast.
Personally I find text adventures too limited to have the energy to enjoy them (Infocom and Magnetic Scrolls excepted). And since Slaine is irritating on top of that, the final verdict reads: a pointless game on which a potentially splendid licence has been squandered. And that was putting it kindly. Text game buffs should probably check it out anyway, though.
