Warship

1988SSI's new strategy game deals with the Second World War naval battles between Japan and the Allies. You can never have too many good strategy games, and there are only a handful that simulate naval warfare, so Warship is a newcomer worth backing.

You can play Warship solo on either side, with two players, or let the computer put on a demo. There are four historical scenarios to choose from, but the game also lets you make your own.

As usual, all orders are given from the keyboard. Ships can be given orders either by division or one ship at a time. The player can assign the ships' divisions personally, which is a useful option, especially when a ship has been badly damaged in battle. Naturally it's worth changing that ship's division number and giving it its orders separately.

After the orders have been handed out, it's on to the action. First the ships blaze away at each other with their guns for a while, with the computer showing the target, and after that the ships move. If the ships have fired torpedoes, next comes torpedo movement and the hits. Once everything has been gone through, pressing O takes you to issuing orders.

Warship's looks give no cause for praise. A black background, a bit of land, and ships here and there. Luckily the ships are recognisable as ships. Even the game's scant sounds are good compared to the graphics. The machine's sound generators are pushed for all they're worth when a ship takes a hit from a gun or a torpedo.

Warship holds your interest for a while, but sadly not for long. And there's not much point in making improvements to it; better to make a whole new game. Not much can be made out of Warship's scraps. It's reasonably playable, a tiny bit interesting, realistic, and nothing more than that.
