Sherlock

1987Sherlock on Melbourne Housen seikkailupeli, jossa pelaaja yrittää ratkaista salaperäistä kaksoismurhaa.

Pelin tapahtumat sijoittuvat 1800-luvun sumuiseen Lontooseen.

Kun peliä on pelannut vähän aikaa, kuvaruutu alkaa täyttyä oviselostuksista: "- open door - which door? - plain door - plain door is already open". Ja sitä rataa.

Kuitenkin Sherlock edustaa Spectrumin seikkailupelivalikoimassa ehdotonta huippua.

1987Sherlock is an adventure game from Melbourne House in which the player tries to solve a mysterious double murder.

The game is set in the foggy London of the 1800s. The player, Sherlock Holmes, reads in the morning paper about an incident that has baffled even the detectives of Scotland Yard: two women have been found murdered, and the only clue is a letter found at the scene of the crime, which is not much help to the police. Naturally, Sherlock Holmes is asked to help with this tricky task.

There are plenty of suspects at the scene of the crime, all of whom protest their innocence and none of whom seems guilty. But one mustn't forget Sherlock Holmes's friend Dr Watson, who has been a great help to Sherlock in many cases. In the game Watson is a quiet tagalong who doesn't babble much, but the more you talk with Watson, the more useful he becomes.

In Sherlock you can get from place to place by the big city's many means of transport: by cab, by underground or by train. This adds a good deal of excitement to the game: will you make the underground or the train in time?

In the game you can converse with all the suspects and ask them questions, so that you can draw conclusions about who the guilty party is. Conversation already works much better than in The Hobbit, since Sherlock's vocabulary has been expanded by about three hundred words. All in all the vocabulary comprises 800 different English words.

Even as adventure games develop, they still have a few poor details that annoy the player quite a lot. In Sherlock especially you quickly get fed up with opening doors, since the game mostly takes place inside all sorts of houses. Once you've played for a little while, the screen starts filling up with door commentary: "- open door - which door? - plain door - plain door is already open". And so on and so forth.

Nevertheless, Sherlock represents the absolute peak of the Spectrum's range of adventure games. For complete beginners the game is too hard; solving it may take several months. But if you want a real nut to crack, Sherlock guarantees gaming pleasure for a long time to come.
