Shao-Lin's Road
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1987Shao-Lin's Road perustuu Konamin arcadepeliin, joka on varmaan jo miljoonas kung-fu-peli. SLR:n pitäisi olla jatko Yie Ar Kung Fulle. Ensimmäiseksi pistää silmään se, että miksi The Edge on saanut tehdä tämän, vaikka Konami nykyään tekee itse käännöksensä.
Syy selvinnee pelattaessa. Ehkei Konami halunnut ottaa vastuuta tästä "pelistä". Shao-Lin's Road on osapuilleen huonoin karatemökellys, jonka olen kuuna päivänä nähnyt. Raaka väite, joka lienee syytä perustella.
Ensinnäkin SLR on suora kopio Data-Eastin Kung-Fu Masterista.
Grafiikka on tavanomaista. Taustat ovat kyllä kauniita, mutta animaatio kangertelee. Yksitoikkoinen musiikki tekee hulluksi, jollei väännä ääntä pois.
1987Shao-Lin's Road is based on Konami's arcade game, which must be about the millionth kung-fu game by now. SLR is supposed to be the sequel to Yie Ar Kung Fu. The first thing that jumps out at you is the question of why The Edge has been allowed to do this one, when Konami these days does its own conversions.
The reason will probably become clear once you play it. Maybe Konami didn't want to take responsibility for this "game". Shao-Lin's Road is just about the worst karate botch-up I have seen in all my born days. A harsh claim, which I had probably better back up.
First of all, SLR is a straight copy of Data-East's Kung-Fu Master. Only Kung-Fu Master was fast-moving and had varied enemies, so it did nicely as brainless entertainment. In Edge's creation, the pace would lose a race to a snail.
The hero moves by shoving himself forward with his back leg. The bad guys move in a Bernsteinian manner ("what matters is the movement, not the goal") without seeming to care one jot about the hero. If the master of Kung-Fu doesn't get round to using his mighty repertoire of moves (one kick), the villain nicks the keeper of Oriental wisdom in passing. Three run-ins and the game is done.
Once per level the hero gets a bonus weapon, which frankly isn't powerful enough even to kill time. If the hero clears the level, he starts flexing his muscles and a little speech bubble announces "Guts!".
The graphics are run-of-the-mill. The backgrounds are pretty enough, but the animation stutters. The monotonous music will drive you mad unless you turn the sound off.
