Shadow of the Unicorn

1987Shadow of the Unicorn on ensimmäinen ohjelma, joka käyttää hyväkseen Microgenin Mikro Plus -laajennusta, joka tulee pelin mukana.

Shadow of the Unicorn tuntuu monen pelin yhdistelmältä. Siinä hallitaan useampia hahmoja samanaikaisesti Lords of Midnightin tapaan. Hahmot tuovat mieleen Everyone's a Wally -pelin.

1987Shadow of the Unicorn is the first program to make use of Microgen's Mikro Plus expansion, which comes with the game. The expansion contains a 16-kilobyte ROM block that replaces the Spectrum's own operating system, leaving a full 64 KB of room for program code. The ROM block contains a tape turbo loader, a memory test, a tape head alignment program and a backup program. The expansion also includes an Atari-type joystick port.

The tape turbo, together with the larger memory, works as excellent protection against illegal copying. The program in the expansion lets you copy the game to cassette or microdrive, but loading is only possible using the (same?) Mikro Plus expansion.

Given the larger memory usage, it's no wonder that Shadow of the Unicorn is a big adventure game with plenty of graphics. The task in the game is to defeat the evil forces that have taken over the kingdoms of Oronfal and Falforn.

The game package comes with a 100-page English-language booklet that tells the story of the game and gives hints.

Shadow of the Unicorn feels like a combination of many games. You control several characters at the same time, as in Lords of Midnight. The characters bring to mind the game Everyone's a Wally. As in Tir Na Nog, you can look towards all four points of the compass.

At the start of the game you can search for objects and friends with three characters. Characters met along the way can be persuaded to join your side in various ways, and at best you can fight with a force of ten characters.

On first impression the game was a slight disappointment. The graphics did not live up to expectations; in places the backgrounds even felt primitive. The movement didn't reach the standard of a typical new release either. Although the adventure is large, it is not one bit larger than Lords of Midnight.

That being so, the extra memory must have been used to add to the game's logic and variety. At first sight, however, the game didn't stir up any strong feelings of delight.

For some reason the tape head alignment program didn't work, and getting the head adjusted back to where it had been took some time.
