Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. 1989 KevätHuono ystäväni paha velho lainaa kyllä tavaroitani lupaa kysymättä, mutta johonkin on raja vedettävä: nyt hän on lainannut rakastamani prinsessan! Se on liian paksua: ei edes kunnon maksua! Kun itse olen massiivinen lihasjättiläinen voitaneen olettaa pelastusoperaation sujuvan onnellisesti, jos kohta väkivaltainen asenne onkin tarpeen.
Säntään läpi velhon linnan runnoen ja murskaten kirveelläni kaikki nuo kirjavat spritet. Matkalta löytyvät tehokkaammat, mutta lyhytikäiset turboaseet kasvattavat karttuvaa kalmotiliä. Kun vartijahirviö on totisesti tuhottu, lataan hetken ja zoomailen kolmiulotteisesti läpi Kuoleman laakson, väistellen toteemeita ja ampuen kaikkea liikkuvaa. Hetkinen! Minua onkin pissitty massiiviseen silmääni: nuppu on edelleen vankina linnassa. Portti on suljettu: en sisään pääse en. Lataan taas pätkän ja muutun uljaaksi kotkaksi. Kun olen selvittänyt julman sokkelon hengissä, saan taas armaani sinne minne hän kuuluu: ison nyrkkini ja uudenaikaisen hellani väliin.
Savagen sankari on he-maniaaninen normaalia isompi sprite, joka edustaa ainoaa uutta ideaa tässä ikivanhoihin ideoihin perustuvassa moniosaisessa pelissä. Muutenkin koko pelin olemassaolon oikeutus näyttää olevan joka jakson isokokoinen grafiikka ja kieltämättä hyvä animaatio niin kuusnelosessa kuin Amigassakin. Perusvika on kuitenkin se, että Savagen pakkaus ja mainokset huokuvat yltiöpäistä väkivaltaa, joka ei kuitenkaan suodatu itse peliin asti.
Kuusnelos-Savagen intro on samplattu kauniin musiikin aikaansaamiseksi, mikäli se jotakuta kiinnostaa. Jokaisen kannattaa itsekunkin Savage silti testata, sillä monet lehdet ovat siitä pitäneet. Minä en, ja siksi tungenkin pelin roskikseen ja jätän sen sinne ikuisiksi ajoiksi.
1989 KevätMy no-good friend the evil wizard does borrow my things without asking, but a line has to be drawn somewhere: now he has borrowed the princess I love! That's a bit thick: not even a proper payment! Since I am a massive giant of muscle myself, it can presumably be assumed that the rescue operation will end happily, even if a violent attitude is called for.
I charge through the wizard's castle, bashing and smashing all those gaudy sprites with my axe. The more powerful but short-lived turbo weapons found along the way swell my accruing corpse account. Once the guardian monster has been well and truly destroyed, I load for a moment and zoom three-dimensionally through the Valley of Death, dodging totems and shooting everything that moves. Hang on! I've been played for a massive fool: the little rosebud is still a prisoner in the castle. The gate is shut: in I cannot get, I cannot. I load another chunk and turn into a noble eagle. Once I've made it through the cruel maze alive, I get my beloved back where she belongs: between my big fist and my modern kitchen stove.
Savage's hero is a he-maniacal, bigger-than-usual sprite, which represents the only new idea in this multi-part game built on age-old ideas. Beyond that, the game's whole reason for existing seems to be the big graphics in every section and the admittedly good animation, on the Commodore 64 and the Amiga alike. The basic flaw, however, is that Savage's packaging and adverts ooze over-the-top violence that never actually filters through to the game itself.
The intro of the Commodore 64 Savage has been sampled to produce beautiful music, if that interests anyone. Each and every one of you should still test Savage for yourselves, since many magazines have liked it. I didn't, and that is why I'm stuffing the game in the bin and leaving it there for all eternity.
