1987Epyxin Pitstop II:ssa on todellinen formula-ajojen tuntu.
Valintaruudussa voidaan valita pelaajien lukumäärä, vaikeusaste sekä jokin kuudesta eripuolilla maailmaa sijaitsevista radoista. Myös ns. Grand circuit on mahdollinen, jolloin osakilpailuissa jaetaan MM-pisteitä. Niitä on radalla tavoittelemassa myös kahdeksan koneen ohjaamaa autoa.
Itse ajoissa toinen pelaa ruudun ylä- ja toinen alaosassa. Yksin pelattaessa tietokone hoitelee alaruudun ajajan roolin. Pelin jännittävimpiä hetkiä ovat takaa-ajotilanteet, jolloin kannoilla ajava näkee omassa osassaan ruutua toisen kaikki liikkeet ja sujahtaa pienimmänkin virheen sattuessa ohi.
Pelin kestäessä polttoaine ja renkaat kuluvat, renkaat erityisesti suuremmilla vaikeusasteilla, jolloin mutkissa täytyy käyttää reilusti jarrua. Ajon aikana on taktikoitava varikkokäyntien ajoitukset.
1987Epyx's Pitstop II has the real feel of Formula racing.
On the selection screen you can choose the number of players, the difficulty level and one of six tracks located in different parts of the world. A so-called Grand circuit is also available, in which World Championship points are awarded in each race. Eight computer-driven cars are out on the track chasing those points too.
In the races themselves, one player drives in the top half of the screen and the other in the bottom half. When you play alone, the computer takes on the role of the driver in the lower screen. The most exciting moments in the game are the chases, where the driver on the other's tail can see every move the leader makes in their own part of the screen and slips past at the slightest mistake.
As the race goes on, fuel and tyres wear down - the tyres especially on the higher difficulty levels, where you have to use plenty of brake in the bends. During the race you have to plan the tactics of when to make your pit stops. Sometimes it pays to take a risk and do one more lap even though the tyres are badly worn. In the pits you can refuel and change worn tyres.
The graphics in Pitstop II are truly brilliant, although now and then the screen may flash strangely or a square that has no business being there may appear at the roadside. These don't disturb the flow of the game, though.
The cars you overtake don't just turn up at random; they keep moving round the track the whole time. Every car the leading driver comes up against is also met by the other player. When either of them overtakes their opponent, they can see the other on their screen, whether the other is on the track, in the ditch or in the pits.
There are no sounds in the game other than the whine of the engines, though that does vary a good deal.
All in all, it has to be said that whoever buys Pitstop II gets full value for their money.
