Pawn

Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Pawn

1987On niitä, jotka pelastavat maailman mieluummin savuava joystick kädessä ja niitä, jotka istuvat näppäimistön ääressä aamuneljään miettien englanninkielisiä verbejä millä pelastaa itsensä kiipelistä. Jos itse kuulut ryhmään pure-laseriani-pieni-vihreä-olio, voitkin jättää tämän jutun lukemisen.

Pawnin kaltaisessa graafisessa tekstipelissä ensimmäisenä tulee tietysti mieleen kuvat. Amigan versiossa grafiikka on päätähuimaavaa. Sain ilon kokeilla myös C-64:n versiota. Parempaa grafiikkaa en ole vielä C-64:ssä nähnyt.

Entäpä juoni? Siinähän täytyy olla potkua, että pelistä jaksaa innostua. The Pawn käyttää osaltaan jo hieman vanhentuneita kliseitä. Peli sijoittuu Kerovnian maagiseen maailmaan. Astut mukaan kuvaan tilanteessa, jossa kuningas on menettämässä kannatuksensa ja valtion taloudellinen tilanne on hitaasti huonontumassa turistien puutteessa. Kaiken kukkuraksi kuningatar Jendah on murhattu.

Kerovniasta löytyy koko joukko sivujuonia, joiden selvittäminen menestyksekkäästi on välttämätöntä suorittaaksesi lopullisen tehtäväsi.

Mitäköhän Infocomin parseri saisi irti lauseesta "Plant pot plant into plant pot", jossa sanaa "plant" käytetään kolmessa eri merkityksessä?

Peli tarjoaa myös vihje-option. Naputtelemalla tietyn koodisarjan saat esiin lauseen, jonka mukaan toimimalla selviät kiperästä tilanteesta.

1987There are those who would rather save the world with a smoking joystick in hand, and those who sit at the keyboard until four in the morning, racking their brains for English verbs to get themselves out of a fix. If you yourself belong to the eat-my-laser-little-green-thing group, you may as well skip reading this piece.

In a graphical text game like Pawn, the first thing that comes to mind is of course the pictures. In the Amiga version the graphics are head-spinning. I also had the pleasure of trying out the C-64 version. I have yet to see better graphics on the C-64.

And the plot? It has to have some kick to it if you're going to stay excited about the game. In part, The Pawn relies on clichés that are already a bit dated. The game is set in the magical world of Kerovnia. You step into the picture at a moment when the king is losing his support and the state's finances are slowly going downhill for lack of tourists. To top it all off, Queen Jendah has been murdered.

Kerovnia has a whole bunch of subplots, and solving them successfully is essential to completing your final task. On your travels you'll meet the magician Kronos, a princess in need of rescuing, a dwarf who wants to be king, and much more.

Text games mostly have no music or sound effects. So why the grade of 10, then? Even though The Pawn on the Amiga can talk, that doesn't explain the high mark. The explanation lies in the title music. Made with the Greengate DS-3 system, the title music could be straight off a record. I could scarcely believe my senses when an exact copy of the picture on the box cover appeared on the screen and gorgeous music came flooding out of the monitor's speaker.

The game's texts make enjoyable reading, and the parser, the part of the program that examines your commands and acts accordingly, is far superior to, say, Infocom's text games. I wonder what Infocom's parser would make of the sentence "Plant pot plant into plant pot", where the word "plant" is used in three different senses?

The game also offers a hint option. By tapping in a certain code sequence, you bring up a sentence which, if you act on it, gets you out of a tricky spot.
