Flash Gordon
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Musiikki on keskitasoa (by Rob Hubbard) ja ääniefektit suppeat. Peli on hyvä esitys Mastertronicilta, jonka tuotteet tuntuvat paranevan aikaa myöten. Flash Gordonia on kuitenkaan turha mainita maailman parhaaksi tietokonepeliksi.
1987Little by little even comic-strip heroes are starting to get games named after them, as game makers grab any idea going as raw material for a game. Asterix and Judge Dredd, for example, are already familiar names to joystick maniacs.
Mastertronic is bringing out a comics game of its own, whose subject is no more and no less than Flash Gordon - the strip named the world's best comic, created by Alex Raymond, who is called the world's best comic artist - that interstellar adventurer whose exploits have (naturally) already been made into a film as well.
All comics fans know that Flash's worst enemy is the cruel tyrant Ming (racism?), who this time too is hatching his utterly wicked schemes. Ming plans to destroy the Earth with some seriously heavy-duty missiles, whose guidance units he carries around with him. All Flash has to do is destroy Ming within 24 hours and the Earth is saved (hip hip hooray!). But it doesn't come easy even for Flash, especially since our hero's spaceship has come crashing down into the jungle of Mongo.
In the first part of the game you have to find your way through the jungle to Prince Barin's cave. The jungle's little critters - fire-breathing lizards among them - and other obstacles, such as chasms, make the going hard. With a bit of acrobatics and a pair of six-shooters you'll survive the journey, as long as you first manage to map out a route through the jungle. The map shown at the bottom of the screen isn't much help, but then it doesn't really matter much anyway.
When you finally find Barin, you can get ready for the next ordeal, which is a little karate bout (aagh - karate again) with the prince himself. You see, to get help Flash has to win the prince's trust, and according to this game the best way to earn respect is apparently to beat up someone weaker than yourself. Nice folks, these Mongolians.
If you get Barin to believe that a guy this tough is best helped, you finally have to chase Ming in a jet speeder kindly handed over by the prince, and try to end the tyrant's days with the missiles that come as standard equipment on the speeder. Easier said than done.
The game has quite a bit of charm thanks to its subject - the loading and title screens, for example, stylishly breathe old Raymond-style Flash Gordon nostalgia. The game seems varied and its execution is average. The graphics, for instance, aren't too bad, if not too good either. The most irritating thing is the Flash figure, who mostly looks like a roly-poly little fellow in a snowsuit and has hardly anything to do with the athletic figure we remember from the comics.
The music is middling (by Rob Hubbard) and the sound effects are sparse. The curses of a multi-part cassette game, with all the rewinding and hunting for the right spot on the tape, may also get on your nerves. The game is a good showing from Mastertronic, whose products seem to be getting better as time goes on. Still, there is no point calling Flash Gordon the world's best computer game.
