1991 SyksyChuck Rockin juoni sisältää riipaisevan tosipohjaisen opetuksen: kun liiaksi keskittyy TV:n töllöttämiseen, naapurin öykkäri käy varastamassa vaimon. Kaappaaminen oli kivikaudella erityisen vaivatonta, koska siihen tarvittiin ainoastaan riittävän painava puukalikka.
Niinpä miehisen löhökulttuurin kantaisän on lähdettävä vaaralliselle taipaleelle noutamaan takaisin armasta pyykinripustajaa.
Tarkemmin sanottuna Chuck Rock on kerrassaan upea. Useamman ruudullisen korkuiset alueet vierivät kauniisti kahdessa kerroksessa ja kaikki toimii sulavasti kellon tarkkuudella. Sarjakuvamaiseksi tyylitelty grafiikka on hiottu silmiähiveleväksi ja siinä on vahva lataus maanläheistä junttihuumoria. Maasto on myös täynnä hauskoja yllätyksiä, joilla rikotaan perusidean yksitoikkoisuutta. Esimerkiksi alitettaessa valtavaa brontosaurusta on oltava varuillaan takajalkojen kohdalla, jotta otus ei ruittaise päälle lastillista guanoa.
Pahiten pielessä on musiikki, joka onnistuu lähinnä ärsyttämään kuulokalustoa. Muuten peli onkin todellinen täysosuma Corelta, vaikka kyseessä onkin tyypillisen turhauttava tasannekohellus eikä pintaa syvemmältä löydy todellista omaperäisyyttä.
1991 SyksyChuck Rock's plot contains a harrowing lesson based on real life: if you concentrate too much on goggling at the TV, the neighbourhood lout comes round and steals your wife. Abduction was particularly effortless in the Stone Age, since all it took was a sufficiently heavy wooden club.
And so the founding father of manly slob culture must set out on a perilous trek to fetch back his beloved laundry-hanger. On screen, this subject matter, touching as it does on profound eternal themes, has taken on all the trappings of a thoroughly conventional jumping game. There's not a trace of tedious cliché, however, thanks to the stupendous comedy and all-round likeability.
In keeping with popular misconceptions, the terrain is populated by saurians that have no business in the flint age, which Chuck shoos away either by thumping them with his outsize belly or by booting them with his foot. Chuck can also snatch a boulder up into his arms, which can be used both as a shield against air attacks and as a missile.
Core, which has fumbled badly at actually putting its games together, has for once managed to produce an effort about whose technical side there is nothing bad to say. To be more precise, Chuck Rock is absolutely gorgeous. Areas several screens tall scroll beautifully in two layers and everything runs smoothly with clockwork precision. The cartoon-styled graphics have been polished into a feast for the eyes, and they carry a strong charge of down-to-earth yokel humour. The terrain is also full of amusing surprises that break up the monotony of the basic idea. For example, when passing underneath a huge brontosaurus you have to watch out by the hind legs, so that the beast doesn't squirt a load of guano on top of you.
Furthest off target is the music, which mainly succeeds in irritating your auditory apparatus. Otherwise the game is a real bull's-eye from Core, even though it's a typically frustrating bit of platform bumbling and there's no real originality to be found beneath the surface.
