Express Raider
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1987Kauan sitten veripunainen aurinko laski horisonttiin biisonilaumojen jylistessä.
Seuraavaksi ratsastetaan uskollisen metwurstin esiasteen selässä pitkin junan vierustaa.
Express Raider on aivan kelvollinen keskitason arcade-käännös.
1987Long ago, the blood-red sun sank below the horizon as herds of bison thundered past. Women were women and men were cowboys. The place was, of course, the USA and the mythical Wild West of the last great humanist, John Wayne. This is where Express Raider is set.
In those days the big railroad companies robbed their passengers with sky-high ticket prices, but some passengers struck back...
This arcade conversion is split into two parts. In the first you hop along the carriage roofs and fight the guards. You can also clobber a couple of scrawny coyotes in the hope of extra points.
There's a time limit for dealing with each guard, and when it runs out the bomb on the coupling between the carriages goes off and the "hero" falls off and gets mashed into red porridge.
If you make it all the way to the locomotive, past the bottle-throwing amigos and the gunmen, the player gets two fat sacks of money credited to their account. But does this satisfy the scourge of the railroads? Well, no.
Next you ride along the side of the train on the back of your faithful metwurst-in-the-making. Colts blaze on both sides as the guards holed up in the carriages practise hitting a moving target. Bump off five and you move on to the next carriage, and so forth until you reach the locomotive, after which it's back up onto the roofs, and so on down the line...
So, yet another beat-'em-up. The background graphics are pretty good, with the train rolling along, but once again the sprites have been left half-finished. A bit too crude for a full-price game. The sound effects don't really back up the action either, with the punches sounding like gunshots and the hits like someone kicking a barrel.
Express Raider is a perfectly decent mid-range arcade conversion. I sorely fear, though, that after a few goes it will start to taste like sawdust.
