Convoy Raider

1987Sarjassamme Gremlinin flopit kerromme tällä kertaa Convoy Raiderista.

Mihin Gremlin on hukannut kaikki taitavat musiikkiohjelmoijansa?

Kaikki yllämainitut seikat huomioonottaen voisi ajatella pelin olevan kaikkien aikojen huonoin. Mutta kaikki ei ole menetetty, ei suinkaan. Eivätköhän voitonmaksimoijat pian keksi julkaista tätäkin kehnoa Beach Head-matkintaa halpapelinä. Tämän rinnalla jopa Miami Vice tuntuu pelattavalta. Miksi tälläistä roskaa enää tehdään?

1987In our series "Gremlin's Flops", this time we bring you Convoy Raider. The plot offers nothing new: war has broken out and your country is in danger. Once again the heavy burden of defending it is laid on the player's shoulders alone. At your disposal are Seawolf, a deadly accurate missile against aircraft and other missiles; Exocet, a video-guided rocket against sea targets; and a submarine-killing helicopter that can drop depth charges on top of enemy submarines.

For a bit of variety, the whole shebang is for some reason set only on coastlines. This little detail doesn't, however, give the game what it's missing, namely excitement. The graphics are truly unimaginative; the colours are perhaps the only thing where imagination has been used, and then some. The sprites are vintage '82, and the control system is nothing to cheer about either.

On the music side things are, if possible, even worse. There isn't even a token scrap of music, and the sound effects are extremely dry and don't do their job. Feeble little pip noises and lousy hissing hardly make you want to crank the volume up. Where has Gremlin lost all its skilled music programmers?

Taking all of the above into account, you might think this was the worst game of all time. But all is not lost, not by any means. Surely the profit-maximisers will soon think of re-releasing this shoddy Beach Head imitation as a budget game too. Next to this, even Miami Vice feels playable. Why is rubbish like this still being made?
