Cholo

1987Cholo erottuu edukseen. Firebird on ollut suosikkifirmani jo pitkään omaperäisten ja kestävien "Gold"-sarjan peliensä vuoksi. Ja nyt sellaisten ikivihreiden seuraan kuin Elite ja Sentinel liittyy Cholo.

i. Ongelmana on vain pinnan radioaktiivisuus. Mutta hah! Säteily sallisi pintautumisen, ongelma onkin droidit, jotka hallitsevat pintaa. Joukko päätietokoneen valitsemia "vapaaehtoisia" on yrittänyt ratkaista ongelmaa, mutta turhaan.

Tehtävä vaatii ammattimiehen. Oma nahka ei suoranaisesti ole vaarassa, koska terminaalin avulla ohjattavat droidit tekevät raskaan työn.

Rizzo The Rat, keskikokoisella ionikanuunalla varustettu droidi on keskeinen ase. Rizzo pystyy lamauttamaan muut droidit ja voi hakkeroida näiden piirit tehden niistä uusia jäseniä Vapausarmeijaan. Igor The Hacker, Anneka The Fly-Eye ja monet monet muut ovat tarpeen ennen kuin pinta kuuluu ihmisille.

Choloa on vaikea luokitella. Se on jonkinnäköinen Paradroidin, Mercenaryn ja Hackerin ristisiitos, josta löytyvä syvyys imee kevyesti kelvottomat lisenssituotteet.

Kaupunki on täynnä mysteerioita, seikkailua ja tunnelmaa. Mukana tuleva kaupungin kartta näyttää kiintoisia kohteita, mutta miten selvitä niihin asti? Grafiikka on varsin onnistunutta vektorigrafiikkaa. Se voisi olla nopeampaa, mutta tekee kuitenkin tehtävänsä. Ääniä ei paljon ole mukaan mahtunut.

Cholo on erittäin, erittäin kiinnostava peli. Kannattaa kuitenkin pitää mielessä, että kaikkien makuun Cholokaan ei ole. Minun on, ja se riittää minulle.

1987Cholo stands out from the crowd. Firebird has long been my favourite company, thanks to the original and long-lasting games in its "Gold" series. And now Cholo joins the company of such evergreens as Elite and Sentinel.

...The only problem is the radioactivity on the surface. But hah! The radiation would actually allow surfacing - the real problem is the droids that rule the surface. A bunch of "volunteers" hand-picked by the main computer have tried to solve the problem, but in vain.

The job calls for a professional. Your own hide isn't directly on the line, since the droids you control from a terminal do the heavy lifting.

Rizzo The Rat, a droid armed with a medium-sized ion cannon, is your key weapon. Rizzo can stun other droids and hack their circuits, turning them into new recruits for the Freedom Army. Igor The Hacker, Anneka The Fly-Eye and many, many others will be needed before the surface belongs to humans.

Cholo is hard to pigeonhole. It's some sort of crossbreed of Paradroid, Mercenary and Hacker, and the depth to be found in it effortlessly swallows those worthless licence tie-ins whole.

The city is full of mystery, adventure and atmosphere. The city map that comes with the game shows interesting locations, but how do you make it all the way there? The graphics are rather successful vector graphics. They could be faster, but they do the job all the same. Not much sound has managed to squeeze in.

Cholo is a very, very interesting game. It's worth keeping in mind, though, that Cholo isn't to everyone's taste either. It's to mine, and that's enough for me.
