Catch-23
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1987"Gee-Whizz!
"Meillä on juuri sopiva mies, Sir!"
Ja niinpä löysin itseni pimeältä saarelta, rynnäkkökivääri selässäni ja Vapaan Maailman kohtalo käsissäni. Tehtävän suorittamiseen on aikaa kahdeksan tuntia, ennenkuin aurinko nousee ja pelini on taas selvä.
Minulla on olevinaan kuvanvahvistin kypäräni visoorissa, mikä selittänee vektorigrafiikan näköisen maiseman.
Ammuskelu on vedetty pahasti metsään.
Catch-23:a kannattaa silti kokeilla jos uskoo olevansa maailman nopein joystickin käsittelijä.
1987"Gee-Whizz! The enemy has built the CK-23, a fighter that operates from orbit, and we haven't got one. The balance of power is going to be badly upset, unless we send one man to the island where the prototype is. He could, say, blow up the island and steal the prototype's blueprints!"
"We have just the man, Sir!"
And so I found myself on a dark island, an assault rifle on my back and the fate of the Free World in my hands. I have eight hours to complete the mission before the sun comes up and it's game over for me once again.
I supposedly have an image intensifier in my helmet visor, which presumably explains why the landscape looks like vector graphics. If only I could find the resistance scientists' terminals, so that the mission would start to make some sense.
Catch-23 depicts a mission behind enemy lines. You can get around the different parts of the big island not only on foot but also by shuttle, with stations almost everywhere. A piece of cake, except that there are far too many enemy patrols, men and tanks alike, to stay alive for even five minutes.
The instructions are excellent and clear. The vector graphics move fast enough and the game promises enough depth, but ... The shooting has gone badly wrong. You see, within a couple of seconds the poor commando has to get the sights onto the enemy and pull the trigger, and with a joystick that isn't so easy. Sooner or later death comes, as sure as death and taxes.
This one detail sinks a promising game. It's stupid that a game this big should come to an end over one little slip on the joystick. Catch-23 is still worth a try if you reckon you're the fastest joystick-handler in the world.
