Boulder Dash

1987(B.D.II, B.D.III, B.D.Construction Set)

USA:n huippupeleistä ensimmäisiä meille saapuneita oli aikanaan Boulder Dash. Tämän kiinnostavan pelin päähenkilö on Rockford, piskuinen luolaolio, jonka tehtävänä on kerätä kuudestatoista erilaisesta luolastosta timantteja.

1987(B.D.II, B.D.III, B.D.Construction Set)

Back in the day, Boulder Dash was one of the first top American games to reach us. The hero of this intriguing game is Rockford, a tiny cave creature whose job is to collect diamonds from sixteen different caverns.

Each cave is about six screens in size, so only part of it is visible at a time. Once the required number of gems has been collected in the first cave, Rockford gets through a secret door into the next one. Rockford digs a way through by moving in four directions and pushing boulders out of the way.

You have to be careful with the digging. A falling rock can squash poor old Rockford flat, and the diamonds are often tucked away behind some thoroughly awkward excavation. Extra colour comes from the fireflies flitting about in some caves, which turn into diamonds when they end up under a rock! A slowly growing green amoeba is also a nuisance in some caves. Rockford has to wall it in with rocks before it grows too big and turns into boulders.

All in all, the different caves offer very varied tasks, and many of them take a fair bit of thinking before the best approach becomes clear.

Therein lies an extra problem, since each cave has a set time within which Rockford must get out of it.

You can start the game from any of several different caves, as you choose. The graphics are excellent; only the clumsy square shape of the fireflies is a bit baffling. There are five difficulty levels, and they hold plenty of challenge even for an experienced player.

Boulder Dash II and III are exactly the same kind of game; only the caves are different, offering ever more challenging adventures for Rockford's fans. Boulder Dash IV once again has 16 new levels, but on top of that it also lets you build your own caves and games. And oh boy, is it great! Designing your own levels is easy and interesting, and you can save a home-made game of as many as 20 levels to disk or tape.

A recommended game for anyone with the slightest interest in brainwork!
