Avenger

1987Olen harmaa pikkuäijä. The Way of the Tigerin koulusta juuri päässeenä potkin erilaisia ötököitä, heittelen tähtiä ja etsiskelen hyödykkeitä. "Taas joku tylsä karatepeli!", kuulen teidän huokaisevan. Ei lainkaan, ei lainkaan! Avenger on uudentyypinen karatepeli eikä ollenkaan tylsä.

Pelitilanne on kuvattu ylhäältäpäin. Näytön vieritys on huippuluokkaa, pahempia nylkytyksiä ei esiinny. Grafiikka on loistavaa (äijä todella näyttää äijältä!), värien käyttö on tosi nerokasta, eikä äänitehosteitakaan voi suohon laulaa.

Mielenkiintoa pitää mukavasti yllä suuren suuri 300 ruudun kokoinen pelialue ja mekaanisesta tappelemisesta poikkeava tehtävä. Pelin tarkoituksena nimittäin on vapauttaa Kwong-jumala helvetistä.

Pelattavuus on varsin hyvä, tosin vihollisia on liian vaikea tappaa menettämättä energiaa. Pelin rata koostuu kuudesta kerroksesta, joiden välillä pääsee liikkumaan viemäreiden läpi, mikäli omistaa tarvittavan välineen. Ovista pääsee vain avaimilla, joita on todellakin niukasti. Pelin kulku täytyy suunnitella alussa avainten sijainnin mukaan (mikä on varsin ärsyttävää). Hyvä hyvä, Gremlin Graphics!

1987I'm a grey little bloke. Fresh out of The Way of the Tiger school, I kick all sorts of creepy-crawlies, throw stars around and hunt for useful items. "Another boring karate game!", I hear you sigh. Not at all, not at all! Avenger is a new kind of karate game and not boring in the least.

The action is shown from above. The scrolling is top-class, with no nasty judders to speak of. The graphics are brilliant (the bloke really does look like a bloke!), the use of colour is truly ingenious, and the sound effects are nothing to sneeze at either.

Interest is nicely kept up by the great big 300-screen playing area and a mission that is something other than mechanical fighting. The object of the game, you see, is to free the god Kwong from hell.

Playability is pretty good, although the enemies are too hard to kill without losing energy. The game's map is made up of six floors, and you can move between them through the sewers, provided you have the tool you need. Doors can only be opened with keys, which are in really short supply. You have to plan your way through the game right at the start according to where the keys are (which is pretty irritating). Well done, well done, Gremlin Graphics!
