Wing Commander - Secret Missions 2: Crusade
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1991 SyksyIskutukialus TCS Tiger's Clawn juuri ja juuri selviydyttyä operaatio Thor's Hammerista (edellinen Secret Missions) on päämaja antanut alukselle diplomaattitehtävän. Sen tulee saattaa muutama laivalastillinen poliitikkoja konfederaation uusimpien liittolaisten vieraiksi vahvistamaan sopimuksia, samalla olisi kovia kokeneen miehistönkin tarkoitus päästä muutaman päivän rantalomalle.
Origin on ylittänyt itsensä.
1991 SyksyWith the strike carrier TCS Tiger's Claw having only just scraped through Operation Thor's Hammer (the previous Secret Missions), headquarters has given the ship a diplomatic assignment. It is to escort a few shiploads of politicians on a visit to the Confederation's newest allies to ratify treaties, and at the same time the crew, who have been through the mill, are supposed to get a few days' shore leave.
Unfortunately the Kilrathi warrior cult's ceremony, held in a different place every year, happens to fall on precisely those allies' planet. All along the front the Kilrathi fleets pull back and head for the planet. A precondition for the celebration is of course that no infidels be present, and since these allies' technology is still somewhere around the Stone Age, the shore leave gets postponed to the distant future.
Origin has outdone itself. Crusade is more than "just" 16 new missions. The AI of the Kilrathi pilots has been improved enormously, and the ships of the Emperor's Drakhai elite guard in particular put up unbelievably tough opposition.
The Kilrathi have got two new ship types: Snakeir-class carriers and Hhriss-class fighters, which feel as nimble as Salthis but are armed with four massdriver cannons on top of lasers and neutron guns, and which seem to have armour to spare. In addition, that good old clay pigeon the Dralthi has been given better shields and fitted with massdrivers. Missiles have been made more powerful too, and just one is enough to sweep the shields off even a Raptor. A second one may well prove fatal. On top of this the enemies have learned to take evasive action, and the Hhriss fighters flown by the Drakhai warriors in particular seem at first impossible to hit with guns or missiles.
Early in the game a group of Kilrathi defectors hands over a score or so Dralthi Mk2s to the Confederation, and the player too gets to fly a few missions in one. This is rather interesting, since in them you can sneak up behind oncoming Kilrathi ships and destroy one before the others notice that something is wrong.
Faces you've come to know in the mess drop like flies in battle, and there is nothing whatsoever the player can do about it. But luckily a couple of chaps are sent over from the Tiger's Claw's sister ship as replacement crew.
The Transfer program works here too, of course, and my own kill stats are already up around the five hundred mark (shame on you, Richthofen). If the player really distinguishes themselves to the utmost, the commander promises to make them Caliph instead of the Caliph, that is, commander of the ship's fighter wing in place of Colonel Halcyon, who gets promoted to the tactical department.
What more is there to say: a Must-Buy, but Wing Commander veterans know that anyway.
