1991 Kevät"Hyvät lentäjät! Tervetuloa tukialus Tiger's Clawlle. Tilanne on epätoivoinen. Now take this helmet, get out there, and KICK ASS!"
Englannista Amerikkaan loikannut Chris Roberts on jo rikastuttanut pelimaailmaa Times of Lorella ja Bad Bloodilla.
Wing Commander on elokuvamaisilla kohtauksilla höystetty avaruuteen sijoittuva ammuskelupeli, jonka tärkein osuus, taisteleminen, on kuvattu ohjaamosta lentäjän näkökulmasta.
Wing Commander on yksi kaikkojen aikojen parhaita pelejä. Vihollisen tuhoutuessa miljooniksi paloiksi kajahtaa riemukas voitonfanfaari.
Äänikortittomat joutuvat valitettavasti tyytymään vain muutamaan PC:n kaiuttimesta pärähtävään äänitehosteeseen.
256-värinen VGA-grafiikka on herkkua ronkelimmankin pelaajan näköelimille.
Welcome aboard the carrier Tiger's Claw. The situation is desperate. The feline Kilrathi have attacked the Federation and the future of the human race depends on you. Now take this helmet, get out there, and KICK ASS!"
Chris Roberts, who defected from England to America, has already enriched the gaming world with Times of Lore and Bad Blood. Now the man has been involved in designing and programming Origin Systems' new game-making software, Origin FX. Wing Commander is the first game to show off what the new software can do.
Wing Commander is a space-set shoot-'em-up spiced up with cinematic scenes, whose most important part, the fighting, is shown from the cockpit from the pilot's point of view. Wing Commander isn't a space flight simulator, though, but there's still more depth to it than to your everyday standard-issue brainless blaster.
Thanks to the abundant animation and dialogue, the first thing that comes to mind is a film rolling along in the spirit of Star Wars and Galactica, next to which the 'interactive movies' of Cinemaware and the rest feel childish and half-finished.
From canteen to cat-culling
The game begins in the carrier's canteen, where the player can chat with the other pilots and the bartender. The veterans often let slip scraps of information that come in handy in combat. The canteen also has a combat simulator for honing your skills before the real plunge into the vacuum.
At the briefing, the carrier's commander explains each squadron's mission in detail. Beginners get easy patrol flights, but the missions get progressively harder as the game goes on.
The sociable live longer
Not even a greenhorn has to face the cold embrace of the vacuum alone: there's always a computer-controlled wingman or -woman along. This partner is no mere decoration, either: a call for help flung over the radio sends them racing to the scene to do their best to shoo the Kilrathi off the player's neck. The favour must of course be returned at the first opportunity, since without a wingman the player gets the undivided attention of the whole kilrathi gang.
Every character you meet in the game has their own identity and behaviour profile. The sooner you get to know the other pilots' quirks, the sooner you also learn to stay alive with your wingman's help. If your wingperson dies in combat, it can be quite a long time before the player gets a new partner.
The plot branches according to how the missions go. If lots of missions go wrong in a row, the Kilrathi seize new territory and push the Federation back before them towards humanity's original home, Earth. Successes, on the other hand, force the Kilrathi to retreat.
Success also shows in rank insignia and promotions. Rising from second lieutenant to lieutenant, from there to captain and major, takes hard work.
101 ways to kill a cat
The player starts the game in a Hornet-class ship, which is agile and fast but not very tough or heavily armed. Transfers put Scimitar- and Raptor-class ships under the player, and the most skilled get transferred to the Black Lion squadron, formed halfway through the game, whose ship is the experimental Rapier. The differences between the craft are considerable.
Wing Commander offers incredible satisfaction. The Kilrathi are by no means easy cannon fodder; sometimes they're even surprisingly good fighters. That's why the game sucks the gamer perched at the computer right into a battle where no quarter is given or asked. And the separately sold Secret Missions data disk then offers an even tougher challenge for the really hard guys.
Technical perfection
Wing Commander is one of the best games of all time. At every stage of the game the player's eyes are assaulted with the most gorgeous animations, and the pleasure of the ears hasn't been forgotten either. Especially when equipped with a Roland sound card, WC creates a massive atmosphere, with the music changing to match events in the game. Laid-back jazz plays in the canteen, and during combat an exciting theme that on its own gets the adrenaline flowing and the pulse racing. When an enemy is blown into a million pieces, a jubilant victory fanfare rings out.
Those without a sound card will unfortunately have to make do with just a few sound effects blurting out of the PC speaker.
The 256-colour VGA graphics are a treat for the visual organs of even the fussiest player. Unusually, the enemy ships aren't done with vector graphics; instead, every ship in the game has been drawn from dozens of different angles. The program itself can resize the ship's image at lightning speed, creating an impression of distance. On the plus side of the technique are speed and extremely good-looking ships; on the minus side, extremely blocky graphics when a ship flies really close.
Speaking in Wing Commander's favour are, without question, the graphics and sound, polished to the very end, plus the playability and atmosphere. Arguing against is the incredible burden the game system puts on the hardware side of the computer. It says right on the box that the game simply cannot be played on anything weaker than a 12 MHz AT-286 with an EGA display (and even then the game is pretty sluggish). A sound card is also practically a necessity.
If there's a PC on your desk that meets the game's minimum requirements, don't think about it for another second: march to your nearest computer shop and demand Wing Commander (and don't forget the Secret Mission disk). To owners of basic PCs I recommend a swift change of machine; this game is worth it.
