Crime Wave
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Tämän tervehenkisen rynnäköinnin hallinnassa on pikku pulmia. Yhtälailla kinkkistä on saada syvyyssuunnassa seilaavat hahmot tulilinjalle.
1991 Syksy"Our Narc really is better than yours," said the U.S. Gold man to the Ocean man. The most clued-up game experts have already guessed that Crime Wave contains criminal-hunting through horizontally scrolling street scenery, icon-collecting and other familiar stuff, the difference from Narc being that no arrests are made: the street is simply swept clean with no pangs of conscience.
Once the action has been given its initial shove by the kidnapping of the President's daughter, the rest is sheer slaughter. The weapons, topped up with ammo icons raining down from the sky, prettily rip the crooks to shreds, especially when you lob a missile into the mix, which puffs a merry cloud of arm and leg pieces into the air. The very same implement can also be used to trash landmarks such as cola machines in the hope of drugs and other evidence.
Controlling this wholesome rampage has its little snags. The jumps and crouches, performed by tapping the joystick up or down, don't sink straight into your reflexes. Just as tricky is getting characters who sail about along the depth axis into the line of fire. The same goes for dodging bullets that get lost against the background. These discomforts, however, pale beside the shoddiness of the programming.
As the number of people and hardware moving on screen grows, the screen update slows down in direct proportion, until eventually you have time for an afternoon nap while the scrolling jerks along to the next frame.
The intermission episodes that give glimpses of the plot use digitised black-and-white animations, which concentrate particularly on presenting the beautiful Brittany from the front and from behind, but the actual game graphics are flat. The sound offering stops dead at the admittedly beefy whumps coming out of the rifle and the missiles.
The reasonable difficulty level and the curiosity-piquing intermission animations coax you to the screen for a while, but they're not enough to make up for the fact that Crime Wave is an ST port cobbled together with a couldn't-care-less attitude in a take-the-money-and-run spirit.
