Chuck Yeagers Air Combat

1991 SyksyKuuluisa koelentäjä Chuck Yeager on jo ikuisuus sitten lainannut nimensä lentosimulaattoriin.

Jokaisessa sodassa on parikymmentä tehtävää jommankumman koneilla.

1991 SyksyFamous test pilot Chuck Yeager lent his name to a flight simulator an eternity ago. In Chuck Yeagers Flight Trainer you got to fly the most interesting aircraft imaginable, but with one shocking shortcoming: no weapons. Now that shortcoming is finally being put right.

CYCT is split into three eras: the Second World War, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. There's a legion of aircraft, but only the following can be flown by the player: P-51 Mustang/Focke-Wulf 190, F-86 Sabre/MIG-15 and Phantom F4/MIG-21. Each war has some twenty missions in either side's machines.

The most interesting thing is the chance to create missions yourself and throw any planes you like into them. Can an FW-190 shoot down B-52 bombers? Can it even catch them? Could you have steamrollered the Third Reich with a Phantom? These and many other questions of the same sort are answered with a little fiddling.

Chuck himself dishes out tactical advice before the flight and during it too, albeit so well digitised that even through the Adlib I thought the cat was tormenting my records again. The program's sort-of-training character also shows in the inclusion of a video recorder, with which you can go back over the highlights of your flying career and save them to torment your mates with as well.

Anyone who has wrestled with Stormovik or LHX will experience an uncanny deja vu phenomenon with this game. The same guy has evidently been digging through his stock of routines and graphics again. Those vector contraptions don't exactly thrill after Red Baron's "you can even count the rivets" realism, but as a bonus even a feebler machine can manage to run the program.

The biggest shortcoming of Chuck Yeagers Combat Trainer is that the player still flies alone. In principle CYCT offers the same as a legion of other sims, just with different planes. The hair-splitting realism has been toned down enough that even someone who has played less with flight sims stays in the air.
