B.A.T
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Puhtaaseen hiiriohjaukseen on ujutettu melkoinen skaala toimintoja. Kuvien piiloikoneista kaivetaan esiin kulkureitit, juttuseuraa, lähin puhelinkioski ja miljoona muuta asiaa. Ikonittomilla napsautuksilla puolestaan saa näkyviin käskyvalikon, rannekudokseen upotetun minitietokoneen tai mahdollisuuden pysäyttää satunnaisia ohikulkijoita.
Hiirellä hoidellaan erikoisempiakin tehtäviä, esimerkiksi tanssitaan diskossa kauniin Lydian kanssa painelemalla hiirennappuloita musiikin tahdissa. Höysteenä on myös toimintaa, lähinnä tarkkuusammuntaa sekopäisten öykkäreiden käydessä kimppuun sekä liiturin ohjailua kolmiulotteisessa lentosimussa. Muista nokkeluuksista mainittakoon rannetietokoneen ohjelmointikieli, jolla voi laatia komentoja tyyliin "hälytä jos olen nälkäinen".
Satunnaisilla animaatioilla elävöitetyn kuvituksen laatu säilyy yllättävän korkeana, vaikka Terrapoliksen luomiseen on käytetty yli 1100 piirrosta. Parhaimmillaan katumaisemat ovat kuin Bladerunnerista repäistyjä. Valitettavasti taustalla jumputtava diskohumppa on paha pettymys ja Amigisteja nöyrryyttävä piirre. Nimittäin ST-version mukaan laitetun äänikortin mahdollistamia digitoituja tehosteita on ylistetty maasta taivaaseen. Joskus näinkin päin. Alkumusiikki sentään on kunnollista.
1991 SyksyTerrapolis, the largest city on Selenia: a meeting place for the galactic races, and describing it with the words "fascinating and flourishing" takes a sarcastic sense of humour. It becomes even less inviting if the crackpot scientist Vrangor and his henchmen carry out their threat to set off sixteen nucturobiogenic bombs with a bang, whatever those may be.
Once your agent on the Bureau of Astral Troubleshooters' payroll has been created to your liking, you pop over to collect your gear from a contact lurking in the toilets, slip into the bustle of the city, and the adventure can begin. The game is a sort of comic-book epic that makes busy use of speech bubbles and of splitting the screen into strips of several panels. The stylistic devices, for their part, are postmodern cyberpunk in its most hardcore form, which you can get a bit of an idea of from the fact that the red-light district has a cinema advertising virtual porn delivered through all five senses.
Quite a range of functions has been squeezed into the pure mouse control. Hidden icons in the pictures turn up routes, someone to chat to, the nearest phone booth and a million other things. Clicks away from any icon, on the other hand, bring up the command menu, the mini-computer implanted in your wrist tissue, or the chance to stop random passers-by.
The mouse handles more unusual tasks too, for instance dancing at the disco with the beautiful Lydia by pressing the mouse buttons in time with the music. For added spice there's action as well, mainly sharpshooting when deranged thugs jump you, plus piloting a glider in a three-dimensional flight sim. Among the other clever touches, the wrist computer's programming language deserves a mention: with it you can write commands along the lines of "alert me if I'm hungry".
The quality of the artwork, livened up with random animations, stays surprisingly high even though over 1100 drawings went into creating Terrapolis. At their best the street scenes look ripped straight out of Bladerunner. Sadly, the disco oompah thumping away in the background is a bad letdown and a humiliating touch for Amiga owners. You see, the digitised effects made possible by the sound card bundled with the ST version have been praised to high heaven. Sometimes it goes this way round, too. The title music, at least, is decent.
Technically B.A.T pales beside the graphics systems of Delphine, Sierra and Lucasfilm, but then Ubisoft's aim is to create something new: an interactive comic that boldly puts its money on plot and atmosphere. There's room for improvement, but the direction is encouraging.
