1991 KevätNATOn kolonnan valitsema reitti on painajaismainen: keskellä laajaa aukeata olevaa tieuraa reunustavat tiheät metsät, joissa puna-armeijan tankit voivat rauhassa lymyillä.
Aivan oman makunsa pelille antavat metsät, joiden taktinen merkitys on hyvin keskeinen.
Suosittelen.

No onhan Team Yankeessa pahempiakin lapsuksia kuin Jukan luettelemat.
1991 KevätThe route chosen by the NATO column is a nightmare: the road running across the middle of a wide open plain is flanked by dense forests where Red Army tanks can lurk in peace. The fear turned out to be justified, for after a short spell with the binoculars two enemies waiting at the edge of the forest swim into view. The M1 Abrams' guns roar and the Russian T-80 tanks crumple into scrap before the poor wretches even have time to realise what happened. The next moment the air is filled with the deafening din of explosions and jubilation turns to panic: "Six reds on the flank, and more coming out of the woods!"
Team Yankee, the book about the opening moments of World War Three, has been turned into a game so successfully that it is no exaggeration at all to trot out the original slogan "so real you can smell the smoke". The 3D has been created with a mixed-media graphics technique in which vectors are used only for the roads and buildings, which they suit well, while the tanks and forests are drawn with sprites.
The implementation is similar to Their Finest Hour's, but the action runs staggeringly more smoothly. I could hardly believe my eyes when, in the last scenario, a whole battalion of Russian tanks came rumbling across the fields with the game barely slowing down at all. Nor do the tanks vanish after being hit; they stay on the battlefield, smouldering until the end of the fight. The forests, whose tactical importance is absolutely central, give the game a flavour all of its own.
The team consists of four tank groups, each controlled as a single unit. The backbone is the M1 Abrams, touted as the most effective tank in the world, whose armament includes, besides HEAT and SABOT rounds, a smoke screen and a machine gun, though the latter is pretty useless against armour. Backing them up are ITV tanks armed with long-range TOW missiles, a couple of M2 Bradleys and a couple of armoured personnel carriers. During the briefing at the start you can even decide where and at what time of day the artillery slams down a concentrated barrage, but a real man manages without.
Commanding the groups at the same time has been solved by letting the screen show either one group's window at a larger size or all four at once. While advancing it pays to keep them all in view, so you can conveniently follow the situation both from the 3D views and from the zoomable maps. In combat, on the other hand, the big window is nicer to use, if only because it lets you make out better the moments when the enemies meet their end.
The worst slip in realism is that you can go crashing straight through buildings with no visible consequences, and not so much as a peep can be heard from the tanks' engines. Then again, a tank grinding across a field lurches and shudders convincingly, and the gun has proper recoil.
A few extra missions would have been manna from heaven, as there are only five scenarios following the book's plot, plus the same ones made harder four times over after promotion. The missions are also fairly limited in content, but they reach such a level of realism that you start seeing endless T-80 columns even in your nightmares. Recommended.
Advocatus Diaboli
Well, Team Yankee does have worse blunders than the ones Jukka listed. The worst is the stupidity of your own side: unlike in M1 Tank Platoon, the other units don't switch over to computer control while the player is operating one platoon. So there they just sit gawping while the lad from the East punches holes in their flanks. There's something odd about the graphics, too, since the Soviet forces often seem to own Stealth tanks: the map shows a column a stone's throw away, and yet nothing is visible.
A fun enough game, but recommended with reservations.
