Stunts!
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Peli on kuvattu pelaajan näkökulmasta, kuskin penkiltä.
Pelin mukana tulee muutama rata.
Editorin käyttö on erittäin yksinkertaista.
Visuaalinen toteutus on Test Drive III:n luokkaa.
Stuntsista on vaikea löytää haukkumisen aiheita. Pelin tuottanut Broderbund on jälleen kerran pitänyt huolta viimeistelyn tasosta.
1991 KevätAll kinds of car and motorbike games are hugely popular these days. Coming to take on Hard Drivin is Stunts! (the US name) from the makers of Test Drive, which will surely change its name in Europe. The first suggestion, Skid Marks, will probably be rejected, because it can too easily be misunderstood.
The idea is a fast-paced driving game in which the player can choose from more than ten cars, from a Lancia to the Porsche March racer from the Indianapolis 500. The slowest car's top speed hovers just over 200 km/h, while the Porsche March hurtles along at nearly 400 km/h at best. So nobody is setting off in any Beetles. You race either against the clock, in which case lots of pals can drive in turn and see who has the fastest time, or against a computer-controlled driver.
The game is shown from the player's point of view, from the driver's seat. The option, by now standard, of watching the drive from pretty much any direction is found in this game too. Typically enough, these fancy camera angles are of no use whatsoever while you're driving. They only come into their own once the drive is over.
Depending somewhat on the computer's memory capacity and other things, Stunts! records the player's entire drive in memory. After the drive you choose REPLAY, after which the game thinks for a moment and 'rewinds the tape'. A little later a VCR-style control panel appears. Clicking the button marked with the PLAY symbol starts the replay, during which the player can play around with the nice camera angles to their heart's content.
A nicety worth mentioning is the option to interrupt the replay and carry on driving from any point you like, even if the previous attempt ended in a bridge's support pillar. The game does take the cheating into account, though, and won't let the dishonest racer write their name in the high score table. Even replays several minutes long can be saved to disk, and they take up no more than a few K.
The game comes with a few tracks. They range in difficulty from an almost flat speed track to stunt tracks spiced up with breathtaking (and difficult) jumps, corkscrews and obstacles. The tracks are also designed so that roads branch off the route, and by following them (and taking the risk) you may reach the finish faster.
Once you've grown tired of the standard tracks, Stunts! shows its best side: the game includes a track editor, you see. Using the editor is extremely simple. First you choose the terrain (5 different ones) and the backdrop (7 different ones), after which you deftly paint the track with the mouse using the available building blocks.
The game won't let you drive if it detects design errors in the track, although anyone can quite easily build impossible tracks. Experience brings with it an instinct that warns you already at the design stage: "No car in the world is getting through that bit!" The editor is so flexible that you can easily copy your favourite track from some book or another game.
The visuals are in the Test Drive III class. On a VGA display you get a lavish 256 colours, which don't slow down the screen updates all that much. On slower machines you can of course turn down the amount of detail so the game doesn't get horribly sluggish. I do have to admit, though, that you need a pretty powerful box on your desk for the game to move smoothly with 256 colours and full detail.
The game supports many sound cards, but aural pleasure is never quite reached. The music tracks are far too monotonous, and you can't be bothered to listen to them for long. The engine noises and a few thuds and screeches are the only sound effects during the game itself. The game can be played with mouse, joystick or keyboard. The joystick is definitely best while driving, but the menus are most comfortable to use from the keyboard.
It's hard to find anything to knock about Stunts. Broderbund, which produced the game, has once again made sure of the level of polish. Even without the track editor the game would be very good, but the easy-to-use and powerful editor raises it to one of the best games of all time.
