Sharkey's 3D Pool

Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Sharkey's 3D Pool

1991 KevätBiljardipelit ovat erittäin harvassa PC:lle, Amigalle ja C-64:lle niitä on sitten sitäkin enemmän. Itse asiassa Sharkey's 3D Pool on jokin aika sitten julkaistu molemmille koneille, mutta amerikkalaiset suuressa viisaudessaan keksivät antaa PC:n versiolle eri nimen.

1991 KevätBilliards games are very thin on the ground for the PC; for the Amiga and C-64 there are all the more of them. In fact Sharkey's 3D Pool came out on both machines a while ago, but the Americans in their great wisdom came up with the idea of giving the PC version a different name.

The lone 360K floppy in the box doesn't lead you to expect a top-notch game. So the surprise is a happy one when, after installing, a highly playable billiards simulation pops up on the screen. The game is done in vector graphics, which enjoy such enormous popularity these days, so that everything is shown from the player's point of view. Owners of the slowest PCs can, if they like, dump the 3D vector graphics and settle for a table seen from directly above, which stays put without playing up.

The game is best played with the mouse. You aim by moving the mouse with the right mouse button held down, and the left mouse button sends the ball on its way. Before the shot you can adjust the spin and the strength of the shot on the gauges along the top edge of the screen.

Zooming in and out from the table can't be done with the mouse; instead you have to do it by clicking the symbols found along the top edge of the screen. You can't get enough precision when setting the direction of a shot, owing to the game's resolution (320*200). The game makes up for the shortcoming by making it easier to pot the balls. It's enough to hit the ball roughly in the direction of the pocket, and in it goes. This isn't terribly realistic, as anyone who has ever played billiards knows.

The player can play a practice match, enter a tournament or practise spin shots loaded separately from the disk. At the start of the game you can create a character with a set amount of money. Bets are placed on the outcome of each game, and the game ends at the same time as the money does. The disk holds ten or so computer-controlled players, each with their own personality and playing style. Naturally, Sharkey's 3D Pool is at its most fun when two mates play against each other.

The best display mode the game supports is EGA, which, being 16-colour, doesn't need a very powerful machine. The resolution could have been pushed higher, but you can't have everything. I suppose the same goes for sound card support, which isn't there either. As it stands, Sharkey's 3D Pool is a jolly and simple enough game for a few weeks, especially for those interested in billiards.
