1991 KevätKun takana on pelit Maniac Mansion, Zak McKracken, Indiana Jones ja Loom, voi Lucasfilmin seuraavalta peliltä syyllä odottaa jotain hienoa. Jokunen vuosisata taaksepäin sijoittuva merirosvoseikkailu The Secret of Monkey Island lunastaa kaikki odotukset.
Guybrush Threepwood, nuori poika, haluaa palavasti tulla merirosvoksi.
Pojankoltiaisen on valmistuakseen ensin voitettava saarella asusteleva Miekkamestari. Sitten hänen pitää varastaa kuvernöörin kartanosta jumalkuva, ja lopuksi löydettävä Melee-saaren tarunomainen aarre. Tehtävät suoritettuaan on pojan vielä jostain hankittava rahaa, ostettava laiva ja kerättävä laivaan miehistö.
Tuntemattomassa paikassa sijaitsevan Apinasaaren (Monkey Island) uumenissa on kuitenkin tekeillä jotain kavalaa.
Nauraa saa ilman Loom-kokemustakin, sillä TSOMI on ehkäpä Lucasfilmin lystikkäin peli tähän mennessä, eikä huumori jätä yhtäkään kielitaitoista kylmäksi.
Kokonaan alusta uudelleen piirretyt kuvat vievät kuitenkin hurjasti levytilaa.
The Secret f Monkey Island on ehdottomasti seikkailupelien parhaimmistoa.
1991 KevätWith Maniac Mansion, Zak McKracken, Indiana Jones and Loom behind it, you have good reason to expect something fine from Lucasfilm's next game. The Secret of Monkey Island, a pirate adventure set a few centuries back, lives up to every expectation.
Guybrush Threepwood, a young lad, burns with the desire to become a pirate. In the local boozer he meets three pirates who, in between swilling grog, manage to tell him what the boy has to do to graduate as a cursing, stinking pirate. The grog, by the way, contains just about everything imaginable from battery acid to axle grease, as the pirates readily explain. The muck has to be drunk fast, because it eats through the bottom of the mug in no time flat.
To graduate, the young whippersnapper must first defeat the Sword Master who lives on the island. Then he has to steal an idol from the governor's mansion, and finally find the legendary treasure of Melee Island. With those tasks done, the boy still has to get hold of money from somewhere, buy a ship and round up a crew for it.
Deep inside Apinasaari (Monkey Island), which lies somewhere unknown, something treacherous is brewing, however. The ghost of the famous pirate LeChuck has driven all the pirates in the nearby waters into port and is collecting all the plunder himself. The ghost fears the boy will mess up his plans, and decides to take him out of the picture.
While LeChuck hatches his schemes, the player gets on with his tasks. The fencing teacher explains that the secret of swordfighting lies not in skill with the sword but in skilful needling. And so the game's swordfighting scenes are handled in such a way that whoever manages to fling the better cut at their opponent gains the upper hand. After a few sharp quips the winner is clear, assuming the opponent hasn't managed to turn the situation on its head by firing back an even wittier retort. Amusing thought: Hussein might have pulled out of Kuwait if Bush had used a similar verbal blade instead of appealing to logic.
TSOMI is loaded with humour, without forgetting serious and even violent scenes (where did the Teittinen boy see any violence, huh? ed. note). In atmosphere the game very much resembles Loom, and indeed it contains plenty of in-jokes for fans of that game. For example, a sailor who normally answers questions with a single word gets carried away reeling off long litanies about Loom and how excellent the game is, and finishes by urging you to rush to the shop right now and buy Loom. Afterwards he apologises for getting a bit too carried away about certain subjects. You'll laugh even without any Loom experience, since TSOMI is perhaps Lucasfilm's funniest game to date, and the humour won't leave a single person who knows the language cold.
The SCUMM game system has been partly reprogrammed and includes a few welcome improvements. For example, when you move the pointer over an object, the bottom of the screen immediately shows which commands you can use to fiddle about with it. The user interface beats Sierra's equivalent in other ways too, since in TSOMI you don't have to type a single thing; everything is done conveniently with the mouse. Another tangible plus is that Lucasfilm's games don't demand a top-speed machine.
Graphically TSOMI doesn't lag behind any of Sierra's 16-colour games. Like Sierra, Lucasfilm too is moving over to 256-colour graphics, and Indiana Jones, Loom and TSOMI each exist in a separately sold VGA version. The pictures, redrawn entirely from scratch, do eat up a tremendous amount of disk space, though.
On the sound side Lucasfilm has nothing to brag about. The music consists of simple tootlings that sound almost as good through the PC speaker as through a sound card. The sound effects are simple thumps and clinks. The excellent playability and the game's appeal steal the show, though, and you don't even notice the absence of massive, atmosphere-building music. The Secret f Monkey Island is without doubt among the very best adventure games. Best of all, a Finnish version should be on its way/already out!
