Hard Nova
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Kyseessä on siis jälleen kerran avaruusroolipeli, jonka ainoana varsinaisena uutuutena on planeettojen pinnalla lenteleminen aluksella, josta loppuu polttoaine alta aikayksikön. Kaikeksi onneksi kiertoradalla piipahtaminen tankkaa aluksen säiliöt...
Muiden kärsivällisyys saattaa loppua kesken jo ennen ensimmäistä taistelua, vaikka he menettävätkin siinä paljon.
Mikäli harkitsee vasta ensimmäisen avaruusroolipelinsä hankkimista (buuuuuuu...), kannattaa kuitenkin mahdollisuuksien mukaan aloittaa Sentinel Worldsistä. Se on mielestäni edelleen genren paras ja haastavin peli, josta löytyy jopa ripaus huumoria. Star Flightin kanssa Hard Nova on suurin piirtein samaa luokkaa, joskin grafiikaltaan ylivertainen.
1991 KevätTake one spaceship, put in it a crew made up of different races with different skills, fight in space and on planet surfaces, smuggle this and that, save a few star systems on the side - surely this isn't starting to sound familiar??? Behind it once again is EOA, whose product lists also include both Sentinel Worlds and Star Flight plus its sequel.
So this is once again a space role-playing game, whose only real novelty is flying around planet surfaces in a craft that runs out of fuel in no time at all. Luckily a quick pop up into orbit fills the ship's tanks... Even the graphics judder in the customary manner, or else the machine underneath is too fast and the game proceeds at a lethal pace. If the game feels vaguely familiar, that's because it's the work of the Sentinel Worlds team.
Of course Hard Nova also has details worthy of praise. For example it gives you the chance to practise in a television arena against flimsy opponents, and the prize money can be used to equip your crew and ship. The ship also has a database that can tell you things that aren't in the game's accompanying material either. What's more, you can choose as your main character either a man who uses his fists or a femme fatale who makes use of her brains and her accurate gun hand, and after whom the whole game is named. At long last the womenfolk have been taken into account as something other than decorations on game covers.
So Hard Nova isn't bad, but it isn't any sort of revolutionary game either, though its mysteries are ones that fans of space role-playing games will probably have the stamina to solve with enthusiasm. Everyone else's patience may run out even before the first battle, though they'll be missing out on a lot.
If you're only now thinking of getting your first space role-playing game (booooooo...), it's still worth starting with Sentinel Worlds if at all possible. In my opinion it's still the best and most challenging game in the genre, and it even has a pinch of humour. Hard Nova is roughly in the same class as Star Flight, though far superior in its graphics.
