Botics

1991 KevätPikavilkaisu pakkauksen takakanteen jättää vaikutelman, että Botics olisi isometristä 3D-perspektiiviä soveltava toimintaseikkailu, mutta pahemmin ei voisi olla väärässä. Kyseessä on nimittäin todellinen kummajainen pallopelien maailmassa.

Otteluissa on käytössä viisi areenaa pelin alkaessa keskimmäisestä.

Lyhyesti sanottuna Botics on uskomattoman monotonista puppua. Pallon mäiskiminen on aivan liian epämääräistä ollakseen nautittavaa, sillä aina ei ole edes selvää millä korkeudella peliväline liitelee. Lisäksi pelin rakenne on ankeuden huippu. On aivan samantekevää päättyykö ottelu voittoon vai häviöön, sillä kummassakaan tapauksessa peli ei etene mihinkään suuntaan. Ei liigasysteemiä, cup-otteluita eikä mitään. Vaikeustasoja sentään löytyy peräti 80, mutta who cares.

Tämänkin pelin suunnittelijalle joku olisi voinut ajoissa huomauttaa, ettei kaikkia päähän pälkähtäviä älynväläyksiä kannata käytännössä toteuttaa.

1991 KevätA quick glance at the back of the box leaves the impression that Botics is an action adventure using isometric 3D perspective, but you couldn't be more wrong. What we have here is a real oddity in the world of ball games. The pitch is a box viewed from above at an angle, with a narrow goal at each end and a moving bar that does the job of a combined bat and goalkeeper. So the game is a kind of cross between Breakout, tennis and football.

Matches use five arenas, with play starting in the middle one. If the opponent scores, you move one arena towards your own end, and if you manage to score yourself, you advance in the opposite direction. This complicated-sounding idea can also be put another way: to win you need a two-goal lead.

To put it briefly, Botics is unbelievably monotonous drivel. Whacking the ball about is far too vague to be enjoyable, since it isn't always even clear at what height the thing is gliding. On top of that, the structure of the game is the height of dreariness. It makes no difference at all whether a match ends in a win or a loss, since either way the game doesn't go anywhere. No league system, no cup matches, no nothing. There are, mind you, no fewer than 80 difficulty levels, but who cares.

Someone could have pointed out to this game's designer too, in good time, that not every flash of brilliance that pops into your head is worth putting into practice.
