Battle Master

1991 KevätOnce upon a time there was a magical world where orcs, elves, dwarves and humans slaughtered one another to pass the time. According to prophecy, however, a time would come when a killjoy would rise from the rank and file of the common folk, who would bring peace and beat swords into ploughshares (slaughtering most of the population along the way). Does that sound familiar? If not, I suggest you turn to the family headshrinker.

Battle Master is a Faery Tale-type role-playing adventure, but one in which the player has a lot more choice when it comes to role models - you can be any humanoid race you like (the orcs are really beautiful), and there are plenty of professions too, from merchant to wizard (zap). What's more, the player's character can have a band of helpers along for the journey, who keep the hostile baddies at bay with their bows or magic wands.

So Battle Master has all the ingredients of a true role-playing classic, all the more so since the graphics are perfectly passable, apart from being jerky now and then and so on. The game could still have done with some finishing touches, though, since as it is you get no proper idea of how a fight is going, for example, until either the opponent or the player goes poof. The same goes for many other things, which seem to happen half by themselves. In some places pitfalls can even block off the only way forward, and so on.
