Track & Field II

Ainoa ärsyttävä piirre on pelin päättyminen karsintarajan alittuessa.

T&FII on ehdottomasti Nintendon pelitarjonnan parhaimmistoa.

1990 SyksyThe console market, ruled by Japan and the USA, has lately been deluged with golf, American football and, above all, versions of baseball by the dozen. Among these a track-and-field game stands out splendidly from the crowd.

Track & Field II is an Olympic-spirited epic very much along the lines of Summer Games, and its fifteen events have room for proper sport and demonstration events alike: pole vault, swimming, canoeing, triple jump, taekwondo, arm wrestling and so on.

As a whole the package is of high quality, with hardly any dull filler events. Among the most interesting are the hammer throw, archery and pole vault, but the other events are pretty playable entertainment too. Depending on the event, a good performance calls for either precise timing or merciless button-bashing. The only irritating feature is that the game ends when you fall short of the qualifying mark. A much more interesting solution would have been competing for points in freely chosen events, in the same style as Epyx's sports games.

One or two players can take part in the contest, and you can go head to head with a friend in fencing, taekwondo and arm wrestling, the last of which in particular is a fun bit of grunting and straining. The game also has a practice option, although it is spoiled rather badly by the game's odd habit of jumping automatically to the next event. On the sound side, a mention goes to the digitised speech, the like of which you don't often get to marvel at on the Nintendo.

T&FII is definitely among the best the Nintendo has to offer. I myself played the Summer Games series to death back in the day, so track-and-field games no longer really get me going, but if the Nintendo is all you own, the game is a worthwhile buy.
