1990 KevätTutustuin tähän peliin ensimmäisen kerran muutama kuukausi sitten Lontoossa PC-messuilla. Ranskalaisen Ubisoftin edustajat alkoivat jopa hermostua kun jostain Neuvostoliiton rajalta tullut kirgiisi pelasi heidän mainiota tennispeliään tunnista toiseen eikä päästänyt edes paikallisia isoja kihoja pelaamaan. Pidin siis pelistä.
Niin pidän muuten vieläkin. Ja paljon. Voinpa jopa väittää sen olevan paras tennispeli, jonka olen koskaan nähnyt millekään koneelle. Tämä osittain siksi, että Pro Tennis Tour ON hyvä peli, ja osittain siksi, että kilpailu alalla ei tosiaankaan ole järin tiukkaa.
Tenniksen luulisi olevan kaikille lukijoille tavalla tai toisella tuttu laji, joten ei siitä sen enempää. Lajin kiihkeyden ja tunnelman siirtäminen tehokkaasti tietokoneelle onkin aika temppu, mutta kuten sanottu, Ubisoft on onnistunut ihailtavasti. Grafiikka on osittain jopa pröystäilevää, ei tennispeli näin hyvää grafiikkaa tarvitsisi. Audiopuoli hemmottelee pelaajaa: digitoidut lyöntiäänet ja linjatuomarien älähdykset mäiskähtelevät mukavasti kaiuttimista. Yleisön huokaukset ja reagoinnit kun vielä saisi mukaan, niin aijai!
Tiivis tunnelma on siis siirtynyt bittimuotoon hyvin. Realismi jatkuu pelattavuudenkin puolelle: alussa palloa läiskii aivan huvikseen ja kyllä palautukset pysyvät kentällä kohtalaisen hyvin kunhan ei yritä liikoja. Kun taidot karttuvat, alkavat sijoituksetkin onnistua. Syötöt hioutuvat parin tunnin pelin jälkeen todellisiksi tappajiksi. Kun pelaaja etenee urallaan (nousee korkeammalle ATP-listalla), alkaa pelikin vaikeutua. Yllättäen onkin tärkeää kuinka pelaaja on sijoittunut ja mistä asennosta hän yrittää palloa lyödä. Niinpä pelistä riittää hupia viikkojen ajan.

1990 KevätI first got acquainted with this game a few months ago at the PC show in London. The representatives of French Ubisoft even started getting nervous when a Kirghiz from somewhere out on the Soviet border played their splendid tennis game hour after hour and wouldn't let even the local bigwigs have a go. So I liked the game.
And so I still do, by the way. A lot. I'd even go so far as to claim it's the best tennis game I have ever seen on any machine. This is partly because Pro Tennis Tour IS a good game, and partly because the competition in the field really isn't all that stiff.
You'd think tennis would be a sport familiar to every reader one way or another, so no more about that. Transferring the intensity and atmosphere of the sport effectively onto a computer is quite a trick, but as I said, Ubisoft has pulled it off admirably. The graphics are in places downright showy; a tennis game wouldn't even need graphics this good. The audio side pampers the player: the digitised shot sounds and the yelps of the line judges come thwacking pleasantly out of the speakers. If they could just get the crowd's sighs and reactions in as well, then oh boy!
So the intense atmosphere has made the move into bit form well. The realism carries over into the playability too: at first you just whack the ball about for the fun of it, and your returns do stay in the court reasonably well as long as you don't try too much. As your skills grow, your placement starts coming off too. After a couple of hours of play your serves get honed into real killers. As the player advances in their career (climbs higher in the ATP rankings), the game starts getting harder too. All of a sudden it matters how the player is positioned and from what stance they try to hit the ball. And so the game provides fun for weeks.
In a nutshell, Pro Tennis Tour is the best computer tennis ever. If you like tennis, buy Pro Tennis Tour; you won't regret it.
