1989 KevätNyt se tapahtui: C-64:n parhaan tennispelin valtikka on täten siirtynyt Accoladen Serve and Volleylle. Joulun alla ahkerana ollut Accolade on onnistunut siirtämään tenniksen strategiamaisuuden ja yleisen luonteen loistavasti tietokoneelle. Tennis lienee pelinä kaikille tuttu, joten sääntöihin ei kannattane syventyä.
OK, mitä sitten, jos Accoladen parhaat piirtäjät ja animoijat ovatkin siirtyneet muihin firmoihin? Mitä siitä, jos Serve and Volleyn grafiikka on kerrassaan kehnoa? Kuka siitä välittää, jos pelaajat liikkuvat kentällä kuin kilpikonnat mudassa? En minä ainakaan, koska pelattavuus on hiottu juuri kohdalleen.
Ensisilmäyksellä kaoottinen ja sekava kontrollilaatikkokin ruudun yläkulmassa on pienen totuttelun jälkeen uskomattoman toimiva oivallus. Parilla silmäyksellä ja nopealla joystickinväännöllä saa miehen tekemään täsmälleen mitä haluaa, olkoon se sitten terävä alakierteinen kämmenlyönti takakentälle tai löysä tiputus juuri verkon yli toiselle puolelle.
SAV kuuluu niihin harvoihin peleihin, jotka karkeasta ulkokuoresta huolimatta pitävät kiinnostuksen yllä pitkään. Mistään muusta koneesta ei löydy yhtään tennistä, joka kiinnostaisi minua murto-osan vertaa verrattuna SAV:hin. SAV on loistopeli tietokonetta vastaan (etenkin kun tietokone ei pelaa kuin Boris Becker huippuvireessä) ja suunnatonta hupia kaveria vastaan.
1989 KevätNow it has happened: the sceptre of best tennis game on the C-64 has hereby passed to Accolade's Serve and Volley. Accolade, who kept busy in the run-up to Christmas, have brilliantly managed to carry the strategic side and general character of tennis over to the computer. Tennis as a game is presumably familiar to everyone, so there's probably no point going into the rules.
OK, so what if Accolade's best artists and animators have moved on to other companies? What does it matter if Serve and Volley's graphics are downright poor? Who cares if the players move around the court like tortoises in mud? Not me, at any rate, because the playability has been honed just right.
Even the control box in the top corner of the screen, chaotic and confusing at first glance, turns out after a little getting used to to be an incredibly effective brainwave. With a couple of glances and a quick twist of the joystick you can make your man do exactly what you want, be it a sharp backspin forehand deep to the back of the court or a soft drop shot just over the net to the other side.
SAV is one of those rare games that keep your interest up for a long time despite a rough exterior. There isn't a single tennis game on any other machine that interests me even a fraction as much as SAV. SAV is a great game against the computer (especially as the computer doesn't play like Boris Becker on top form) and enormous fun against a friend.
