Mechwarrior

1990 SyksyDynamixin ohjelmoima Mechwarrior jatkaa Activisionin menestyksekästä BattleTech-sarjaa.

Hyvin normaali tehtävä on esimerkiksi panttivankien pelastaminen.

Graafisesti MW on sangen erinomainen.

1990 SyksyMechwarrior, programmed by Dynamix, continues Activision's successful BattleTech series. Whereas Infocom's BattleTech was manna for those interested in role-playing games and giant robots, MW replaces the role-playing with three-dimensional vector graphics and a realistic environment. In fact MW is really a Mech simulation, and the sheer number of keys only supports this impression.

The player is a Mech-owning mercenary who tries to earn honour and money by carrying out various missions for the leading clans. A very ordinary mission, for example, is rescuing hostages. The player has to crash into the enemy base with guns blazing, destroy as many Mechs as possible along the way and finally blow the base's walls to kingdom come, rescuing the hostages in the process.

What makes landing missions very interesting is the haggling. The clan makes an offer and the player gets the chance to state their own fee. You can influence the size of the fee, the bonuses and the seizure of goods found on the battlefield. The fee is in units of money, whereas the bonuses and goods are reckoned in percentages. The player gets the percentage agreed in the contract of all the Mech gear found on the battlefield. You can take the haggling quite far, but in practice the limits show up after less than a minute of bargaining.

So at the start the player has only one Mech. As the funds pile up, the player can go and recruit other Mech pilots into their own unit from the local dive. Naturally the other pilots have to be given Mechs too. That costs a packet, and even a good player won't be able to buy a second Mech for a long time. The money tends to go on equipping and repairing the robot you already have, you see. When the local scenery starts to bore you or the missions have run out, the player can load all their worldly goods onto a spaceship and whizz off to one of dozens of other planets. New planet, new missions and opportunities. All in all there are several dozen planets, so you won't run out of things to do in MW any time soon.

Graphically MW is quite excellent. The filled three-dimensional vector graphics are fast even on slower machines, and the realistic movement (the horizon bobbing in time with the Mech's footsteps) creates a fine atmosphere. The complex and versatile combat computers are confusing at first, but learning them, though it takes a fair while, is certainly worth the time spent. The sound is the beeping typical of the PC, and MW doesn't even use sound cards for anything but the intro music. So in any case the sound effects come from the PC's own sound chip. The fairly thick manual will kill even the keenest urge to play in those who don't know English, but those who speak the language will quickly sink into MW's world, perhaps for a long while.

To sum up, MW is easily the best BattleTech-themed game around at the moment. If robots are close to your heart, invest your marks pronto.
