BattleTech

1989 Syksy31. vuosisata - viisi valtiota taistelee tunnetun maailmankaikkeuden herruudesta.

Suositellaan.

1989 SyksyThe 31st century - five states are battling for mastery of the known universe. And this war isn't fought with sticks, but with gigantic Battlemech fighting robots whose mere appearance turns the Transformers pale. And these metal giants pack multi-level firepower too! Such is the intriguing setting of Infocom's first role-playing game, BattleTech.

At first the game focuses on Jason Youngblood, a young 'Mech cadet of the Lyran Commonwealth, who is trying to train as a 'Mech warrior on the planet Pacifica. In between his training, Jason picks up knowledge not just of 'Mech skills but also of small arms, medicine and 'Mech technology. Clever Jason raises funds the way that's popular in Finland too, namely by pouring his pocket money into stock speculation. But dark clouds gather on the horizon and, for reasons best left unsaid, Jason is forced to set off on his adventure. Not another word may be said about the plot.

Teeny-weeny Jason toddles across a huuuge map, either on foot or at the controls of a 'Mech, alone or in company. The cities of Pacifica have to be tracked down and the planet mapped as the adventure goes along. The user interface works nicely with the mouse; you only need to touch the keyboard once in a blue moon.

The battles are the spice of BattleTech. The robot-on-robot battles in particular are tactically interesting, since they revolve pretty tightly around heat. Whatever a 'Mech does, the action raises the robot's temperature. If the temperature climbs too high, the robot suffers heatstroke, which in the middle of a battle practically means death. This comes on top of the everyday tactical considerations. And when the fighting starts to get tedious, you can dump the whole lot on the computer to worry about.

Graphically BattleTech isn't strikingly good-looking even on the ST and Amiga, but when the graphics do their job, who cares. The little pictures that pop up now and then liven up the overall look and give the game some graphical flavour. The game was made by Westwood Associates, the regular team for 16-bit role-playing games, familiar from as far back as the Phantasie days.

BattleTech is easy to play and, most importantly, it stays interesting most of the time. Giant robots weighing tons are a refreshing addition to a market oozing with demons and barbarians. Recommended.
