Grand Prix

No niin hyvät kuuntelijat, olemme saaneet testiajajamme haastateltavaksi.

1990 SyksyTsei Tsei Jippon accelerates dashingly into the first corner and squeezes between the two leaders with a spot of Ben Hur-style wheel-banging. But what's this, a plunge into the hairpin in fifth gear, and plantain bushes are flying all the way up here to the commentary box.

Well then, dear listeners, we've got our test driver here for an interview. How would you comment on today's performance?

'Finding the motivation was hard, because this Atari Formula One game, Grand Prix, represents a very old-fashioned approach in both its concept and its execution. Creating three-dimensionality with sprite-based graphics isn't fashionable - just think of the realism of Indianapolis 500, taken to the limit.'

Quite. Pole position slipped through your fingers in qualifying. What went wrong?

'All five gears were working, and the handling had a touch of understeer, but otherwise it felt good. The biggest problem was the slowness of the graphics. Even at top speed the scenery seems to drift towards you at walking pace, so the team ought to polish up the graphics routines a bit more.'

And how would you compare GP with your previous experience of the Formula One circus?

'You won't find anything much of significance here, even compared with the classic Pitstop II. At least there are rear-view mirrors at the top of the screen, so you can see the cars coming up behind you, but that's not a new idea either. There are eight authentic circuits, such as Brands Hatch and Monaco, pit stops are included, and so is qualifying to settle the starting grid. You can race against a friend by cabling two machines together, but the lack of an ordinary two-player mode is actually a pretty poor feature.

There's nothing much to say about the middling graphics and sound; the only refreshing detail is the manly digitised speech at the start. Somehow I was left with the feeling that the top games on the market are a few laps ahead, and GP is a strong candidate to end up among the retirements.'

So today didn't go to plan, but perhaps there'll be better luck in the next trials. Signing off from here in Pasila.
