Ferrari Formula One

1990 SyksyRacing games are going through their own period of change towards a more complex form of expression. Ferrari Formula One was one of the pioneers of the new direction, and now there is a 64 version of it.

FF1 is not just a racing game; it tries to give a more all-round introduction to the world of F1 racing. The game's designer and the accompanying material alone point to a serious treatment of the subject, and on top of that EOA claims the game contains 'all the excitement of the world of Formula racing'.

FF1 is made to be played either as an advanced racing game or as a sort of Grand Prix simulation, which is where the game's strengths come to the fore. In that mode you can modify the Ferrari to your heart's content by adjusting, say, the front wings, the fuel injection or the gear ratios. Changes can be tested before the race either in the wind tunnel or during practice laps, but you may have to redo the settings just before the race if the weather changes.

The driving part itself, however, is not entirely successful, as the slowness of the graphics hurts the playability. Racing game sound is a whole other story, of course, and its weakness usually doesn't bother anyone. The slowness is offset by the option to adjust the car's handling, which improves the playability. Many of the menus are clearly laid out, and the pictures of the pits and the cars look polished for a change.

As usual with Electronic Arts games, polish and variety are Ferrari Formula One's strongest points too, and even someone after a pure racing game surely won't be disappointed. Test Drive I and II have now got a commendable successor, without the progress being overshadowed by cashing in. Those looking for fast-paced racing games had better beware, though, as FF1 may not grab you the very first time.
