Crack Down

Ensimmäinen silmiinpistävä seikka on näkyvän alueen pienuus.

1990 SyksyCommando themes are the coin-op makers' safest store of ideas whenever they get that nasty "gotta come up with something" feeling. Sega's two-player Crack Down is related to Ikari Warriors, except that the screen is split vertically into two halves, in which the buddies Ben and Andy, each in his own half, make mincemeat of the evil Doctor K's brainwashed troops.

In the top-down mazes the aim is to plant a few time bombs and then nip smartly off out of there. The chaps can also sneak along with their backs pressed tight against the wall, which is a handy skill indeed in the hail of bullets in the narrow alleys. The weapons are a cannon and a machine gun, used in that order until the ammo runs out. With the super bombs you can flatten a whole company. After that all you have left is your fist and a combat boot in a very large size.

The first thing that strikes you is how small the visible area is. There's a radar to help, but you rarely have time to glance at it. When an enemy gets in close, which is hard to avoid, the hero automatically starts jabbing with his fists, usually at thin air. In a way the enemies are surrounded by a dead zone in which you can't do anything. Add to this a fast pace and endlessly replenishing reserves of soldiers, and it's no wonder that while you're still learning, death comes every couple of seconds.

Despite the difficulty you quickly get into the routine of the early levels, but in the later ones you're in serious trouble if there's no second player to give covering fire. At times you get the downright feeling that the player isn't being given any chance at all.

On the outside the game feels polished: the graphics are colourful, the action-movie music is catchy and even the scrolling is fairly tolerable. The playability doesn't quite reach coin-op levels of smoothness, but you'll still play CD without a grumble, at least for a while.

Crack Down doesn't exactly wallow in plot - the task is to destroy the evil Doctor K's stronghold by planting three bombs in predetermined places on each of its sixteen levels and moving on to the next level before they go off.

The game can even be played by two players at once, cooperatively, mostly in the style of Gauntlet: shooting enemies, opening chests and (of course) planting bombs. Besides a heavier bazooka, the arsenal contains a machine gun and a pile of grenades. You can get more gear if you happen to find some in the chests lying scattered about. Hand-to-hand combat is also possible if an enemy gets too close.

Besides ordinary moving and fighting, the players can also press themselves against a wall, which protects them better from enemy fire. Surprisingly enough, a relatively large amount of artificial intelligence has been packed into Crack Down's small enemy sprites - on first appearing in the play area they glance around looking for the player - and if there's none to be seen, they set off to patrol their surroundings. The enemies also only see straight ahead, so taking them by surprise from behind is perfectly possible.

Although Crack Down isn't especially varied, you still enjoy playing it, accompanied by good music. The action is fast enough and there's enough challenge to glue the player to their chair for a reasonably long time. For those who like Gauntlet, a bit more of the same sort of thing, in a better wrapping.
