Wings of Fury
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1990 KevätAmerikkalainen Broderbund muistetaan muutaman vuoden takaa sellaisista pelihelmistä kuin Lode Runner, Castles of Dr. Creep ja Raid on Bungeling Bay. Parin vuoden ajan hiljaa ollut yhtiö on nyt tulossa vauhdilla takaisin, hyvänä esimerkkinä olkoon vaikka erinomainen Typhoon Thompson.
Wings of Furyn on Broderbundille ohjelmoinut Unlimited Software, joka koostuu suureksi osaksi ohjelmoijista, jotka loikkasivat Accoladen palkkalistoilta omaksi yhtiöksi. WOF on toisen maailmansodan aikoihin sijoittuva lentokonepeli, eikä aivan normaali sellainen.
Pelaaja näkee kaiken suoraan sivulta, joten kysymyksessä ei todellakaan ole täysiverinen lentosimulaattori. WOFia voisi luonnehtia sivusuuntaan vieriväksi ammuskelupeliksi, jota on kehitetty hieman pidemmälle.
Alussa pelaaja saa tehtävän, esimerkiksi saaren puhdistamisen kaikesta vihollisaktiviteetista. Tehtävän tarkoituksen mukaisesti valitaan sopiva aselasti ja kone nousee hissillä lentotukialuksen kannelle.
Kontrollit ovat erittäin yksinkertaiset, joystickin lentosuuntaan vääntäminen lisää nopeutta, päinvastaiseen suuntaan vääntäminen pistää koneen kääntymään 180 astetta. Mainittakoon että kääntyminen on animoitu todella hienosti.
Työntämällä joystickia yläviistoon lähtee kone nousuun. Tietyn rajan ylityttyä peli siirtyy niinsanottuun maisematilaan, jolloin oma ja muiden koneet näkyvät erittäin pieninä pisteinä ja koko pelialue näkyy alapuolella.
Koneiden pienuudesta huolimatta ilmataistelu on edelleen mahdollista.
1990 KevätThe American Broderbund is remembered from a few years back for such gaming gems as Lode Runner, Castles of Dr. Creep and Raid on Bungeling Bay. After keeping quiet for a couple of years the company is now coming back at full speed; let the excellent Typhoon Thompson serve as a good example.
Wings of Fury was programmed for Broderbund by Unlimited Software, which is made up largely of programmers who defected from Accolade's payroll to set up a company of their own. WOF is an aeroplane game set around the time of the Second World War, and not an entirely normal one at that.
The player sees everything straight from the side, so this is definitely not a full-blooded flight simulator. WOF could be described as a sideways-scrolling shoot-'em-up that has been developed a little further.
At the start the player is given a mission, for example clearing an island of all enemy activity. A weapons load suited to the purpose of the mission is chosen, and the plane rides a lift up onto the deck of the aircraft carrier.
The controls are extremely simple: pushing the joystick in the direction of flight increases speed, and pushing it the opposite way makes the plane turn 180 degrees. Let it be mentioned that the turn is animated really beautifully.
Pushing the joystick diagonally upwards sends the plane into a climb. Once a certain limit is passed, the game switches to what is known as landscape mode, where your own plane and the others show up as very small dots and the whole play area is visible down below.
Despite how small the planes are, air combat is still possible. Just jam the fire button down and the plane's cannons spit hot lead into the tail of the Zero wriggling along ahead. The puffs of smoke and tongues of flame belching from the planes' engines are nice details.
For all the excellence of its execution, WOF is dogged by a tired idea and the simplicity of the game. There just isn't enough to do, full stop. The graphics are nothing remarkably brilliant, although they are beautifully animated. The sound side is always the Americans' stumbling block, and so it is this time too. The sounds consist of bombs going bang, cannons going rat-a-tat and splashes if you happen to drop a bomb into the sea. There's nothing to complain about in the playability, but because of the lack of things to do the game can't hold your interest for very long. If you're thinking of buying, ask to play a couple of trial games first.
