Wings of Death
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

WOD:ssä on puolestaan useita erilaisia siivekkäitä, joiden ympärille rakennettu asesysteemi onkin pelin omaperäisin keksintö. Nimittäin joka otukselle on omat aseikoninsa. Jos poimii vääränmallisen, joutuu aloittamaan nollatilanteesta uudessa hahmossa. Jos taas nappaa oikean, saa luonnollisesti uutta puhtia ienonteloihin.
Täytyy tunnustaa, että tulitehossa on parhaimmillaan oikeansuuntaista otetta. Esimerkiksi lepakon ruittaisema pikkuinen pallo leviää liekkisfääreinä kahdeksaan suuntaan, lohikäärmeen lieskat leviävät viuhkaksi ja eräänkin lentävän koiran tulipallot kiemurtelevat ruudun laidasta laitaan. Ikävä kyllä vihollispuolen suunnittelussa on tyydytty täysin apaattiseen perusroskaan. Ovat ne jänskän näköisiä, mutta voisi niissä välillä olla jotain ideaakin.
Taustoissa on jonkin verran yritystä, mutta sekavuus ja räikeät värit kavaltavat suunnittelijan kokemattomuuden. Äänet taas on pilattu pahasti säröilevillä digitoinneilla.
On WOD ainakin yhdessä asiassa huipulla. Nimittäin pelien normaalijakaumaa kuvaavalla Gaussin käyrällä, jonka keskus on määritelty seitsemänkymmenen pinnan kohdalle.
1991 KevätAnother vertically scrolling shoot-'em-up with extra weapons? What wrong have I done to be punished like this? Certain subjects are apparently so short-lived as games that they won't vanish from our midst even by wearing out.
Wings of Death (the name is so tasteless it could almost have been thought up by Finns) is somewhat reminiscent of Dragon Spirit, where the fire was spewed by a flying dragon. WOD, on the other hand, has several different winged creatures, and the weapon system built around them is the game's most original invention. You see, each critter has its own weapon icons. If you pick up the wrong sort, you have to start from scratch in a new form. If you grab the right one, you naturally get fresh oomph into your gum cavities.
I have to admit that at its best the firepower has the right sort of grip. For example, the little ball the bat squirts out spreads as spheres of flame in eight directions, the dragon's flames fan out, and the fireballs of one particular flying dog wriggle from one edge of the screen to the other. Unfortunately, the enemy side's design has settled for completely apathetic standard junk. They do look kind of neat, but now and then there could be some idea to them, too.
There's some effort in the backgrounds, but the messiness and garish colours betray the designer's inexperience. The sound, for its part, has been badly ruined by crackling, distorted digitisations.
WOD is at the top in at least one thing, though. Namely on the Gauss curve that describes the normal distribution of games, whose centre has been fixed at the seventy-point mark.
