Fiendish Freddy's Big Top O'Fun

Peli alkaa animaatiolla, jossa huippupitkällä limousinella paikalle saapuva pankinjohtaja vaatii takaisin sirkukselle lainaamiaan rahoja.

Suoritukset arvostelee klovneista koottu raati, jonka ilmeet kertovat kaiken.

Pelin mieleenpainuvin piirre on hulvaton slapstick-huumori, jossa on selviä vaikutteita Warner Brothersin piirrosfilmeistä.

1990 KevätFiendish Freddy draws its subject matter from the world of clowns and glittering leotards. The way it handles the subject is familiar from sports games, but a plot has also been grafted on as a backdrop. The game begins with an animation in which a bank manager, arriving in an ultra-long limousine, demands the return of the money lent to the circus. So the show has to be a success, or the result is bankruptcy. The evening doesn't get off to a promising start, since out of a pocket-sized VW Beetle pops Freddy, dressed as a clown, with every intention of sabotaging the show.

The game has six breathtaking, daring etc. acts, in which up to five players can take part at a time. First up is high diving, where you strike as many funny poses as possible on the way down and try to hit the tub of water. In the second act a clown balancing on a unicycle juggles balls and clubs. On top of that there's also the trapeze, dagger throwing, tightrope walking and the human cannonball.

If you succeed in your act, you can try the same one at a harder level. For example, the number of objects being juggled goes up to four, and in come anvils, chainsaws, babies and other fun things.

The performances are judged by a panel made up of clowns, whose expressions say it all. In the worst case they nod off and the till doesn't ring, but a giggling panel guarantees financial success.

Small, nasty Freddy's task is to disrupt the performers every way possible. In the high dive, for example, Freddy tries to push the player aside with a fan, and in the cannon act the barrel gets plugged with a cork if you dawdle too long.

The game's most memorable feature is its riotous slapstick humour, which shows clear influences from Warner Brothers' cartoons. The high diver getting stuck fast in the ground brings Kelju Kojootti to mind, and even the cannon uses Acme gunpowder. Usually the only thing to laugh at in games is their lousy execution, so you'd think there would be a gap in the market for a refreshing exception like Freddy. At the very least it stands out favourably from the grey mass of uptight games.

Games put together from many events are usually dragged down by the fact that there are a couple of interesting events in the bunch and the rest are more or less unplayable. The same applies to Freddy too. The club juggling, which demands skill and concentration, is among the best of the lot, but in the cannon act there's nothing to do except set the distance to the target and fire the cannon at the right moment. Playing alone soon starts to feel wooden, but the bigger and noisier the gang of mates you can gather round the monitor, the more fun it gets.
