Freddy Hardest

1988Espanjan ihmemiehet, eli ohjelmoijatiimi Dinamic on lyhyen ajan sisällä lyönyt kehiin jo kolme peliä. Edellisethän olivat suosittu Army Moves ja vähemmän suosittu Game Over.

Freddy Hardest on intergalaktinen playboy eli siis eräänlainen Bitin avustajan korvike. Pelipojan raketti lerpahtaa (niinkuin pelin alussa näytetään) ja Freddy haaksirikkoutuu asteroidille, josta pitäisi päästä pois jatkamaan hummailua. Kunnioitettava tavoite.

Tällä kertaa Dinamic on tehnyt hyvää jälkeä. Vaikka peli onkin lähinnä kuin edelliset kaksi uusilla spriteillä, on grafiikka hyvää ja äänitehosteet myös. Spritet on animoitu hyvin ja Freddy tottelee joystickiä.

Vaan Dinamicin tyyliin peli on erittäin vaikea. Taas vaaditaan sekunnin murto-osan ajoituksia ja pikselintarkkaa hyppelyä. Viikatemiehen viedessä Freddyn joutuu mies aina alkuun, mikä ajan päälle käy pitkäveteiseksi. Jotkut tälläisestä pitävät, minä en.

Niille, joille joystick ei ole pelkkä peliohjain vaan käden luonnollinen jatke on Freddy Hardest painonsa arvoinen haaste. Muut voivat ostaa sen kostoksi naapurin leuhkalle pelimiehelle.

1988The wonder boys of Spain, i.e. the programming team Dinamic, have already thrown three games into the ring in a short space of time. The previous ones, as you know, were the popular Army Moves and the less popular Game Over.

Freddy Hardest is an intergalactic playboy, which is to say a sort of substitute for Bitti's Assistant. The playboy's rocket goes limp (as shown at the start of the game) and Freddy is shipwrecked on an asteroid, which he needs to get off so he can carry on living it up. A worthy goal.

And where the plot ends, a pretty ordinary shoot-'em-up begins. Freddy of course has that symbol of manhood, the laser pistol, but Mr. Hardest can also deliver a mean flying kick. The first part of the game deals with Retu Kovanen's journey across the surface of the asteroid, and if he survives that, he gets a code with which you can play the second game, where you pick your way through the aliens' house. By then Freddy can already punch and even defend himself. That's what experience does for you.

This time Dinamic have done a good job. Although the game is mostly like the previous two with new sprites, the graphics are good and so are the sound effects. The sprites are well animated and Freddy does what the joystick tells him.

But in true Dinamic style the game is extremely difficult. Once again it demands split-second timing and pixel-perfect jumping. When the Grim Reaper takes Freddy, the man always has to go back to the start, which gets tedious after a while. Some people like that sort of thing; I don't.

For those to whom the joystick is not just a game controller but a natural extension of the hand, Freddy Hardest is a challenge worth its weight in gold. Everyone else can buy it to get revenge on the show-off gamer next door.
