Champ, The
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. 1990 KevätMitä yhteistä on narukehällä, Sylvester Stallonella ja The Champilla? Nyrkkeilypä tietenkin. Amigan nyrkkeilypelien harvalukuiseen kaartiin on tullut osuva lisäys Lineliltä.
Nyrkkeily on nyrkkeilyä, joten se peli-ideasta. Nyrkkeilyn säännöt löytyvät ohjekirjasta.
Champissa pelaaminen etenee loogisesti. Aloitteleva miehenkaataja joutuu ottelemaan aluksi kadulla kavereitaan vastaan, kunnes manageri poimii hänet salille harjoittelemaan.
Graafisesti Champ on ihan hieno.
1990 KevätWhat do a roped ring, Sylvester Stallone and The Champ have in common? Why, boxing, of course. The sparse ranks of Amiga boxing games have received a well-aimed addition from Linel.
Boxing is boxing, so that's it for the game concept. The rules of boxing can be found in the manual.
In Champ, play progresses logically. The fledgling man-feller first has to fight his mates in the street, until a manager picks him up to train at the gym. The gym's training programme consists of skipping, the heavy bag and the speed ball. These affect the boxer's attributes, strength and stamina. The aim is to reach the international arenas and the world championship.
At last you get into the ring with a real opponent. The men shake hands and the referee signals the start. There are several moves to choose from - three blocks and seven punches. On top of that, every now and then the men grab hold of each other and thump away at the tummy, as is customary in proper boxing. The referee is on the ball at every moment and points out fouls. The count works too.
After a sufficiently well-landed punch the opponent goes down flat on his face and takes a count. At the top of the screen are the hit counters and the fighters' energy. If the energy drops to zero, the next hit is a knockout. Once the bout is decided, the referee shows the winner in the classic manner and the screen shows a slow-motion replay of the final seconds.
The game state is saved automatically to the original disk after every bout. Because of this the original has to be left un-write-protected all the time, and of course you can't make a backup of it. Oh, the viruses! The menus do give you the option of making a separate data disk for the game state, but I for one couldn't get it to work; instead the machine hangs, classically. That kind of thing smacks of a rush to get it finished, and it leaves a bad taste in the user's mouth.
Graphically Champ is quite fine. The boxers could be a tad bigger, but the backgrounds and animation just melt in the eye. The sounds have been picked with care and well digitised. At the start of the game there's a superb animation, the credit for which goes to the supervisor of Rocky IV. The intro music is also from Rocky and has been done in a mediocre way. All in all Champ is a perfectly decent representative of its field, i.e. a worthwhile choice of boxing game when there isn't much else on offer right now anyway.
