BlockOut!
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

BlockOut on toteutettu vektorigrafiikalla, milläpäs muullakaan. Tottakai, sehän on koko homman idea.
Out of Control on yli kolminekymmenine paloineen kaamea ja 3-D-mania on edellisten välimuoto. Kolmiulotteiset palaset ovat ties minkä mallisia, sinne tänne sojottavia ulokkeita on mahdoton hallita ainakaan ihan heti. Onneksi pelissä on harjoittelumoodi.
1990 KevätAll good games are often clones of other good games in one way or another. If somebody for once comes up with an original idea, it gets cloned. The same goes for Tetris, the only game ever to come from across the eastern border.
Besides BlockOut, i.e. three-dimensional Tetris, there's also the Finns' very own clone on the market, Coloris, which is already spreading beyond our borders too, and more are on the way.
BlockOut is done in vector graphics - what else? You try to cram pieces of different colours and shapes into a grid that looms far away at the end of a tunnel, by spinning and twirling them around both their horizontal and vertical axes. When the grid is full, it disappears. Naturally, that's the whole point of the thing.
BlockOut takes a while to learn before you can properly make out how the pieces will fit. Helping you put them in place are horizontal lines that lead all the way down to the end of the tunnel.
In the Flat Fun setting you pick the game up addictively fast, since only flat pieces are used. Out of Control, with its more than thirty pieces, is horrendous, and 3-D-mania is somewhere in between the two. The three-dimensional pieces come in heaven knows what shapes, and the knobbly bits sticking out every which way are impossible to master, at least not right away. Fortunately the game has a practice mode.
BlockOut has no counter to tally how many full grids you've managed to complete. A pity, since in Tetris at least that's a far more important piece of information than the points, which pile up in some vague fashion.
There are options for just about everything. If you want to speed the game up even further, you can move the grid closer. Or change the size of the floor. Or set the pieces dropping on their own at a terrific pace. Each variation has its own high-score table, which keeps the scores stored permanently.
In terms of playability BlockOut is good, and the graphics are fitting. Rotating the pieces works best with the keys, since the mouse can only be used for moving them around, not for rotating. The pieces clunk into place with a sound effect.
Don't start playing too late in the evening. It might go on until morning.
